Impossible middle debacle or just choose the other name?

We have tried and cannot possibly find a middle name that is of interest with the first name Marigold (who would go by Goldie). Many names flow easily with Goldie, but the hard "D" on Marigold has us a bit stumped. We don't want a simple and expected middle (like June, Kate, Jane, Mae, etc). Any ideas?

My husband says its a sign and we should just choose Clementine, which is our other choice.

I will take any feedback, including impressions of how the name ages, people you know who wear these 2 names, etc.

Marigold, reminds me of a brand of rubber gloves.

It's not just a brand name for me. It's what I call rubber gloves. Have you seen my Marigolds? Same as my Mum and my Gran did. Maybe it's a Scottish thing, but I definitely would not name a child that.

Goldie to me is a dog.

Minnie, Cece and Minty are all awful and Clem makes me think of phlegm.

Really like marigold - what are the middle names you’re thinking of? I don’t think it’s hard to have one that follows on easily.
I like clementine too, but I wouldn’t have both - it’s just too much orange.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/04/2026 17:49

What’s wrong with Marigold Clementine?

I like it. Very bright and shiny.

Why do middle names have to begin with a vowel?

It just makes me think of the old joke: 'They called her Marigold and hoped she would'.

I like it, it's pretty and it would go with so many of the names up thread. Back your hunch and go for it. Re Clementine - are you sure you wouldn't want to hold it in reserve for a future possible child?

That's part of the predicament. We are going to be one and done I believe, so I want to use the names I love most as it is likely my only chance.

See this is where I am perplexed! Mixed reviews with some saying combine them, and some saying it's too colorful.

It really doesnt matter. No one ever remembers middle names or is even aware of them apart from birth announcements, marriage and death announcements.

pick what you like, have more than one middle name. It doesn’t matter

StationJack · 03/04/2026 18:46

@julesmontgomery , On MN posters focus on the first name and middle name combination but in real life people usually go by the first name and surname.

Marigold Clementine Surname will be Goldie Surname most of the time.

Itstheyearitstarts · 03/04/2026 18:48

I think Clementine is very pretty, and shouldn’t be shortened.
sorry, I really don’t like Marigold as others have said it reminds me of rubber gloves and Goldie was a dog on Blue Peter.
I would also leave out a middle name, the name is pretty on its own and a middle name isn’t needed.

GloriaHeeler · 03/04/2026 18:52

I think you should just call her Marigold Clementine as those are the names you like.

17caterpillars1mouse · 03/04/2026 18:55

Marigold Eva
Marigold Lucy
Marigold Rachel

They sound nice together and they’re both great names - but it just sounds like only orange names would do! They’re both distinctive for their colours.

Clementine Goldie or Goldie Clementine all the way!

Sorry - but I’d hate to be called Marigold, at any age,

It's much better than Goldie though.
Goldie just doesn't sound like a real name

GreenMarigold · 03/04/2026 19:06

I’m not normally one for out of the ordinary names but I have to say I do like Marigold. I like Clementine too but I think they are too yellow to use together.

Marigold Clara
Marigold Alice
Marigold Jane
Marigold Celine
Marigold Celeste
Marigold Kate
Marigold Rosalie

It follows on well from the hard D end of Marigold.

Marigold Elizabeth. You need a middle name starting with a vowel.

Why not just Goldie?

We were thinking along the lines of shall we put Goldie or Marigold on DC2’s birth certificate because we wanted to use the nickname for everyday. However we decided to give DC2 the Marigold name in case they wanted to be a high court judge. If they wanted to be DJ, then they could use the Goldie name. DC2 is now a student and is still known to everyone under the Goldie name and always has been. It works well.

Marigold Mariella
Marigold Mae
Marigold Elouise
Marigold Amber
Marigold Autumn
