Elias Pronunciation

I like the name Elias, but am concerned people would pronounce as ELias, not eLIas. Really don't want to saddle a child with a name they always have to correct the pronunciation of. Thoughts?

Elias and Eli are not related names.

They are two different names. Elias and Elijah have the same meaning but not Eli.

Tobias is Tob-ee-as in some languages.

Before my kids did phonics at school I would have pronounced it ELias now I would pronounce it eLIas

I think most people have seen Person of Interest and would tend to pronounce it that way? As it's apparently the most popular show on Netflix (?), even teens are talking about it, so it's probably a name like Idris, in that while you might not know many people called it, you know the usual pronunciation.
Every Elias I have met (not many, I think only about 3) gets called Eli, though.

My name has three pronunciations.I genuinely don't care if people get it wrong. It has even more spellings.And again, i'm not sure why this is considered such a problem. Far happier to have my unusual name, then to be called something that's easy to spell but dull!

Not saying they shouldn't, just giving my experience of fifty plus years of explaining how to spell and pronunce both my names and never really minding.

I have one in the family, and it’s mostly Eli, sometimes Lias (which I don’t like) but pronounced like it’s spelt alias. Not Elias’s. Soft E. We are in the West Country.

I have heard it said both ways.

But people quickly learn.
I know many Mayas and there is about a 50/50 split in pronunciation between May - a and My - a. Everyone just knows who is who.

Don't overthink it, it is a great name.
