Anyone who objects to a name under the grounds of "cultural appropriation" should be ignored like the strange, unthinking person they are.

Must your name reflect your heritage? I’m not aware of this rule!
I know a child with Indian heritage called Niamh…no one has questioned this. I see no problem with using the name Neelam for a child of any heritage, it a pretty name.

Nobody is saying your name must reflect your heritage.
Niamh is mainstream. Neelam isn't, so is likely to have people saying 'Where's it from?' then something like 'Are you Indian?', and she'd probably get it happening a lot and it becomes tedious.

She might get people assuming she was mixed-race or Indian, or a Hindu.

Yeah why not? I grew up with a girl with the srilankan name Jayanthy and she was as English as they come no sriracha lankan heritage at all
