Would Neelam be a nice name for an Indophile’s daughter (Indophile- India lover) with no Indian connection?

I love the name personally and it means sapphire and blue

Anyone who objects to a name under the grounds of "cultural appropriation" should be ignored like the strange, unthinking person they are.

Must your name reflect your heritage? I’m not aware of this rule!
I know a child with Indian heritage called Niamh…no one has questioned this. I see no problem with using the name Neelam for a child of any heritage, it a pretty name.

@Myfridgeiscool , Must your name reflect your heritage?
Nobody is saying your name must reflect your heritage.
Niamh is mainstream. Neelam isn't, so is likely to have people saying 'Where's it from?' then something like 'Are you Indian?', and she'd probably get it happening a lot and it becomes tedious.

She might get people assuming she was mixed-race or Indian, or a Hindu.

Are you sure it’s not Neev which is an Indian name?

MaybeIamJustABitch · 23/03/2026 15:20

I know a Nilam (but not a Neelam).

Nope: she’s definitely a Niamh.

I’ve just namechanged to say this is my name! It’s really mixed name in Indian/Pakistani culture in that I’m a Sikh Neelam (v unusual) but I had two friends at a school a Muslim Neelam and a Hindu Neelam! It’s also the name Ed Sheeran had totooed on his leg for his song sapphire. I’ve had a lifetime of Nee-LAMB when it’s Nee- lum but not so ‘um’ more ‘ahm’ so clearly I love it but it’s deffo kind of a 1980s name and I’ve always loved being Neelam.

What a beautiful name u have

@LiquoriceAllsorts2 , It's a short form of Eleanora. It is far more popular as a unisex Arabic name.

It was the most popular name given to baby girls in Netherlands in 2025

NamingNoNames · 24/03/2026 17:25

Yes but Noor has been used for decades as a unisex name, and the Arab population is larger.
