Longer versions of Max

I know Max went through a phase 10 or so years ago of being popular but I'm considering it. I'm not sure though of just having Max. What are people's opinions of longer versions of it?
I did quite like Maxim when I came across it reading the novel Rebecca but at the time I thought it's a shame the men's magazine ruins it, but given that's not a thing anymore and younger generations won't have that associations can it be used? I also quite like Maximus but I think it's maybe too out there.
The safest might be Maxwell but I'm not sure about it.
What do you think?

I like Maxim best - I wouldn't think of the magazine and in any event he'll likely use Max in day-to-day life. Maxwell is too surnamey and Maximillian is just a bit much.

Cando6 · 30/01/2026 05:15

Just Max I do know a ‘Maxi’

JesssIsCrazzzzzy · 30/01/2026 09:23

Maxy (as a nickname)
Maximillian
Maxim
Maxine (Girl)
Maksym
Maxwell
Maximus
Maxfield (an acquired taste)

They're all awful.

I love Maxim (but I think that is short for Maximilian)
I like Maximus too but not as keen on Maxwell

cariadlet · 30/01/2026 20:01

I like Max on its own.

Maximilian is the long name that automatically came to mind but I'm not keen on it.

Maximus sounds pretentious to me (as do most Roman or Ancient Greek names).

Maxwell makes me think of Maxwell House coffee or Maxwell's Silver Hammer.

Maxim suits a Maxim de Winter style suave, wealthy, middle aged man but I can't picture a toddler called Maxim.

Parsleyforme · 31/01/2026 12:03

Personally I immediately think of the mag when I hear Maxim. Maximus sounds Roman or dog-like (like Brutus). So I prefer Maxwell. But I think just Max is completely fine. I like it a lot more than Jax and Dax which just sound like cleaning products to me 🙈

CoffeeChocolateWine · 31/01/2026 12:08

My Max is just Max as I wasn’t keen on the any of longer versions.

I considered Maxwell but I just don’t like it, Maximilian and Maximus felt too weighty for a small child to pull off, and Maxim which I liked best but didn’t like the magazine link.

I have a Welsh friend who has a son called Macsen, shortened to Max which I think is nice. But I just love Max on its own. It’s a great name ❤️

Max does mean "the Greatest" after all Grin

NamingNoNames · 31/01/2026 12:53

Macsen is the Welsh name for Magnus Maximus. I don't think it works outside Wales. It's a bit too much like Jaxon.

I know a Max who is Maqsud but he is of Pakistani heritage.

distinctpossibility · 31/01/2026 12:56

Macsen is Mac like Big Mac and then sen as in pen. It doesn't actually sound like Jackson.

Max is perfectly good on its own imo

RosesAndHellebores · 31/01/2026 13:02

Maxim
Maxwell
Maximilian (sp)
Maximus

I prefer any rather than just Max. DS's era was that of Ben, Sam, Max Jack and not all shortened from the full name. I preferred Benajamin, Samuel, MAXim/well/ilion, John on the birth certificate.

NamingNoNames · 31/01/2026 13:04

@distinctpossibility , it doesn't sound like Maxon in Welsh but it will when someone who doesn't speak Welsh says it. (Neighbour has one, his mum's family don't speak Welsh.) I like it but not when said as Maxon.

Max on its own is fine. I like it because it is short.
Maximilian is ok but long. Maxwell House, Gluteus Maximus, Maxim lads mag...

ajandjjmum · 31/01/2026 13:12

My Max is coming up 34. He is 'just' Max on his birth certificate - we felt that Maxwell was 'coffee' and Maximilian felt too pretentious.

He has commented recently that he wished we had used a long version of his name - not sure why! I think Maximus would have been his preferred option.

HopingForTheBest25 · 31/01/2026 13:15

I have a Max (just as it is) but if I was choosing now, I'd probably go with Macsen.

Edited

He can call himself Maximus now as an adult .Smile
My DS is happy enough with Max , but when he is impersonating he does this

"Mexx tidy your room, Mexx come and help me here" voice ( I don't call him Mexx BTW !)

My DC are even more deprived , no middle names , and DS with a three letter first name . <shame>

Grin I don't think he's that bothered!

WallaceinAnderland · 01/02/2026 15:56

I knew a polish boy called Maciej which is usually pronounced MAH-chay or mah-tsey but he pronounced it Matjek which could be shorted to Maks.

mrstambourinewoman · 01/02/2026 15:57

I came across Maxence the other other day and thought that was pretty cool. French

NamingNoNames · 01/02/2026 16:00

@70isaLimitNotaTarget , my DC don't have middle names either and they have 4 letter first names.
