Thoughts on Sabine?

My husband and I are leaning towards ‘French’ girl names as his family is from a country in the Middle East with deep French influence. He really loves Sabine (sah-been), and I like it a lot as well, but I’m wondering if it’s a little TOO uncommon here in the US? Neither of us have ever met a Sabine. Too similar to the name Sabrina?

Genevieve is a very, very close second and a name I have loved long before we found out we were expecting. So torn!

We won’t be sharing the name until the baby is born but I can’t fight the urge to solicit feedback, lol

@cloudjumper , I said that! I know a Sabine and she's German. She says sab-een but that she's really za-been-uh.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 14/01/2026 13:25

I think of Sabine as a German name because I've known 2 German Sabines. Not a fan tbh. But the issue with names is always personal associations.

CoddledAsAMommet · 14/01/2026 13:28

My first thought would be Rape of the Sabine Women.

My second would be that it's a shame, because the French pronunciation is very pretty and chic, but not enough to take away the rape connotations.

Therewerelions · 14/01/2026 14:07

I really like Sabine and I also worked with a lovely French woman with the name.
Some people did call her beeny, not sure if she liked that but she never complained.

CJones11 · 14/01/2026 17:09

Actually love Sabine 🙂

Lucia573 · 14/01/2026 17:12

It immediately makes me think of the rape of the Sabine women, I’m afraid.

Moreteaandchocolate · 14/01/2026 18:38

I think it sounds a bit dated because it’s similar in sound to Celine maybe.

Moreteaandchocolate · 14/01/2026 18:41

Ps I like Genevieve, but all the shortenings are popular shortenings for other names - Jenny, Evie, Vivi - so people might assume she’s, e.g. Jennifer, if she goes by Jenny.

tsmainsqueeze · 14/01/2026 18:41

Lovely .

MeganM3 · 14/01/2026 18:44

There is a Pascal in my DC class and I think that’s so French and cute/chic. I love Genevieve too. Not Sabine so much.

downunder50 · 14/01/2026 18:46

Love Sabine. No idea about the art.

Happyapplesanspears · 14/01/2026 18:49

I really like it. It’s the name of a Star Wars character so certainly won’t be an unfamiliar name in the US.

Giraffehaver · 14/01/2026 22:35

I always find the arguement against using names of rape survivors really odd. The women didn't commit a crime and in most cases were strong intelligent women. Why only focus on their unfortunate attacks?
Sabine is beautiful

Jaspering · 14/01/2026 23:32

I knew a Sabina at school. Great name.

Pettenell · 15/01/2026 01:35

I like Sabine. But I love Genevieve! Gorgeous name! Either would be good choices, but I have a clear favourite!

ChocolateCinderToffee · 15/01/2026 22:22

Love it, one of my absolute favourites. In Germany it’s pronounced Sa-been-eh.

OneDaringGreenBiscuit · 15/01/2026 22:35

Sabine is lovely. When I hear it as a name I never associate it with the Rape of the Sabine Women. I am very familiar with that event and the artworks as I studied Classics. There are lots of names that could be associated with awful people/events. I think if you like it don't worry about it.

BertieWoostersChaps · 16/01/2026 03:43

I much prefer Genevieve, gorgeous name! I know a couple, one goes by Evie.

Less keen on Sabine, I know one and she is German.

Sabine is lovely and the nn Beanie is very cute

MamaMumMama · 25/01/2026 22:30

When I was at nursery that was my best friends name. I’m now 40 and have never come across that name since. I love it.

Obeseandashamed · 25/01/2026 23:14

This is a gorgeous and unique name without sounding crazily out there. Love it!

2Pandora · 25/01/2026 23:49

My mum was a Sabine - I love it but she hated it - said she spent her whole life having to correct spelling and pronunciation. We all have very short common names !

Funny how people sometimes go the opposite way. I went to school with someone who was one of 4 in her class with her name. She gave her dds really unusual names I'd never heard of before.

mathanxiety · 26/01/2026 02:10

Sabine would be perfectly fine in the US. It's the place where you're least likely to have anyone make a comment on your name. I live here and the people (young and older) that I know have all sorts of names, from all sorts of traditions. Nobody minds if your name is unusual or ubiquitous.

Genevieve is lovely, but I prefer Sabine.
