Arch

KatieB356 · 05/01/2026 21:32

A male colleague has just announced that his son is Arch, just Arch. Not short for Archibald or Archer / Archie and now I want to add it to my shortlist as I absolutely love it however with Arch not being too popular would I look like I have stolen their name?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

agirlandherdog1234 · 06/01/2026 13:49

Wow? It's not my personal choice but people are so incredibly mean on here about names!

Honest!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/01/2026 14:01

I’d step ahead of the curve @KatieB356and go for Ellipse or Isosceles?

agirlandherdog1234 · 06/01/2026 14:01

Lollylavender · 06/01/2026 13:53

Honest!

Appreciate honesty but people are so mean on here, it's really sad. The OP didn't ask for opinions on the name, but whether it would be considered stealing. Similarly I've posted on here about a name before and asked a question about it, NOT for people's opinion*, and yet people continued to totally bash the name anyway. Wild.

If people are asking for an opinion, yes fine. But unsolicited ones are just not nice.

Edit: * not for people's opinion on the name itself.

If the OP just wanted to ask ‘is it okay to copy the unusual name my colleague has given his child?’, then they should have left the question at that. But the name was volunteered in the OP, so there’s no reason for people not to comment on it in their replies.

And it is objectively a fairly silly name and one which invites comment.

I agree, I don't like the name myself but it isn't for me to say that, when the OP didn't ask for anybodies opinion. Should we be caveating any post about a name with "I do not want opinions on the actual name?" Now? I'm not being mean here, just making a genuine point 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is literally the baby name board, where people give opinions on baby names on a public forum open to anyone. Opinions on the name is obviously inevitable. Nothing wild about it

Exactly! Don’t ask or click on a thread if you don’t want to hear people’s honest opinions.

Arch is a ridiculous name - it looks like Arsch Shock and sounds so harsh.

Cope?

I met a Cope years ago! He must be late 40s now. I wonder whether it was his full name or short for something.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/01/2026 14:30

agirlandherdog1234 · 06/01/2026 13:34

Yes, I know and Archie who goes by Arch.

I know an Arch. Idk what it’s short for, or maybe an anglicisation of - she’s of Indian heritage.

HugoYorway · 06/01/2026 14:38

Is your surname Bishop?

I'm simply just saying I think people are unkind! If an OP has asked specifically for an opinion on a name - fine. Yes Arch is a ridiculous name but just he nice to the OP!! They didn't ask for what people thought of the name is my point. And I see horrible, vile unsolicited comments about names all the time. Would you say such a horrible thing about a name if a child was introduced to you face to face?

ShawnaMacallister · 06/01/2026 15:16

Archie is already a nickname as a full name and Arch is just ridiculous.

HugoYorway · 06/01/2026 15:33

Would you say such a horrible thing about a name if a child was introduced to you face to face?
@agirlandherdog1234 , no, we'd probably say 'that's nice' and think it's awful.

But if somebody asked you, you'd be bold enough to give your opinion. Same principle behind a keyboard.

If they said something like *We're thinking of calling him Arch. Do you like it?' I'd say 'No, it's awful'.

The OP is probably just winding us up.

I wouldn’t comment if I was presented with a child already named something ridiculous, as they exist and the name does too, so it would serve no purpose. But if I was told before a child was born and named that this name was being considered? You bet I’d say something to them, in the hope of helping the parents see that it’s likely not to be a good choice. Only someone close to me would be having that conversation with me, so I’d hope they would know I am a nice person their family’s best interests at heart. The OP’s child hasn’t been born yet, so I think now is the time to share an opposing view if someone holds it.

Agatav · 06/01/2026 15:54

They’re probably going to think you “nicked” it but it’s a name, you guys won’t work with each other forever, will they even go to the same school? Not an issue.
i really like arch, feels American though but that might be just because I associate it with the Texas quarterback (arch manning)

HelenaWilson · 06/01/2026 15:57

You could just change it slightly to Archway.

Siblings could be called Tufnell Park and Kentish Town.

This must be a wind up! Nobody is seriously considering naming their child Arch Shock

Lollylavender · 06/01/2026 16:00

Arsch" (pronounced arsch) is a German vulgar slang word for "ass," "arse," or "buttocks," used to refer to the bottom or anus.

This would not travel well!

FollowSpot · 06/01/2026 16:10

Look up the dictionary definitions of arch as an adjective.

Being arch is often being superior, short with people, critical etc. An arch reply is often an unpleasant comment.

It would sound terrible as a name in a Leeds accent, for example.

Archie is lovely (IMO), Arch is dreadful.
