Is Deborah too dated/old?

Spent this afternoon looking through the baby name book with dh. We both like Deborah as it has the strong feel that we both gravitate towards. I've not heard it used for a while. Is it too dated?

OP posts:

@Wishimaywishimight , They probably don't realise that Deborah is about as trashy as Sarah or Rebecca.

cantbearsed247 · 26/12/2025 19:17

It's very dated, I'm not a fan. It makes me think of Debbie does Dallas too.

People calling it trashy, horrible etc might try and remember that women with this name are reading the thread. It may not be to your taste but there is no need to be quite so blunt 😆

Indeed, or have called their child that name.
Taste in names is very subjective, but people on here rarely accept that.

Yes!

OrangeAxolotyl · 26/12/2025 19:20

If you love the name, use it. It'll come back round again and you'll be ahead of the curve!

Many people hate my name. I don’t care and if I was that sensitive about then I’d best avoid the baby names board because if you ask people for opinions then you’re going to get them.

Your name was Deborah (Deborah)
It never suited ya

Cannot think of anything other than Disco 2000 by Pulp, so a no from me I'm afraid

MeganM3 · 26/12/2025 19:21

Old Testament name. Deborah was a strong female leader and a fighter. Deb-or-ah

It is unusual. Apparently Hebrew for Bee, symbolising diligence, sweetness, and community.

I love those Old Testament names.

It's a step up from Tracy/Sharon - not a good choice.

Cat1504 · 26/12/2025 19:29

It’s not good …and the diminutives are awful…don’t do it

littlelongstockings · 26/12/2025 19:30

We call our dog Deborah as a silly nick name so I'm going to say no I'm not a fan!

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 26/12/2025 19:32

Deya?

sharkstale · 26/12/2025 19:33

My mums name so yes I see it as very old lol

mathanxiety · 26/12/2025 19:35

Lovely name. Sounds refreshingly original to me in a sea of Florences, Olives, Ediths, and all the rest of the currently popular granny chic names.

Esme, Ivy, Violet...yes, quite a different vibe.

cloudbusting12 · 26/12/2025 19:51

I think this name will have a resurgence soon. My mums name I think it’s beautiful

CNDflag · 26/12/2025 20:01

I’ve always liked the name Deborah

Lararoft · 26/12/2025 20:13

Had quite a few classmates (I’m 49) with this name, all known as Debbie. Plus some much older colleagues.
My view of the name is coloured by the (sometimes not that nice in a few cases!) personalities of the various Debbie’s!
I went to school 80s - early 90s. As well as Debbie’s we often had:

Nicola
Kelly
Emma
Sarah
Claire
Rachel
Michelle
Catherine / Katherine / Katie
Laura
Louise
Sally

Wingingitbestican · 26/12/2025 20:18

Debbie is my best friends name - late 40’s. She is known as Debs.!Although it wouldn’t be a name I’d choose for a baby - I didn’t realise so many people hated it this much . It’s a bit dated sure but there are definitely worse names

Mydadsbirthday · 26/12/2025 20:21

I think it's strong and classic and I like OT names but I really don't like Debbie!

ChikinLikin · 26/12/2025 20:26

I love it.

RubyBirdy · 26/12/2025 20:43

I love Debbie, really cute.

Nickisli1 · 26/12/2025 20:46

I don't like it sorry - 70/80's and it feels dated. But my daughter also has an unusual name so i say go for it if you love it

delightful1 · 26/12/2025 20:53

Not classic to me- very dated! Sorry OP!
