Carmen - is it cool or crap?

Know it reminds people of Carmen Electra but she won't be around in 5 years time (hopefully).

Would it work with an english last name or should it be reserved for latin names?

I knew a French woman called Carmen

notnowbernard · 10/06/2008 20:14

I love it

I have a friend called Carmen and she hates it

leakyR · 10/06/2008 20:16

Not neccesarily latin. DH has a Swiss cousin who gave birth in March and named her dd Carmen. It's apparently a reasonably popular name in Switzerland.

BTW I like it too

Anglepoise · 10/06/2008 21:24

dp like it too and we never agree - thanks for all your replies, think I might actually have a girl's name sorted! Now it just has to be a girl of course.

It's lovely. It's Latin (in the sense of what the Romans talked) for 'song' or 'poem'.

Half Spanish family here: to me sounds a little odd for an English girl and definately a dark haired girl name in my mind. Cannot imagine ginger Carmen. But might be the Spanish influence in my head.

slinkiemalinki · 11/06/2008 23:28

I like it. Know a very clever and nice lady called Carmen. Dark-haired though. I just think of Bizet's Carmen, needs dark hair I think!

naswm · 11/06/2008 23:30

like it - reminds me of the opera by Bizet

Flibbertyjibbet · 11/06/2008 23:32

I used to have two cats called Carmen and Miranda. So no, it wouldn't do for me as a childs name.

GreenGodess · 12/06/2008 10:29

I love it really pretty and unusual but not odd and anyone who associates it with Carmen Electra is not a friend you want!

DonutMum · 12/06/2008 10:30

Hmmm. No.

Loriycs · 24/06/2008 23:15

I didnt think carmen electra , thought carmen miranda and so did most people when i suggested it for my youngest. We didnt choose it- but i do love the name

Pitufina · 25/06/2008 18:28

I love the name Carmen. But for me it just depends on how people pronounce it really.

MrsMattie · 25/06/2008 18:29

I love Carmen. Classy, reminds me of the passionate Carmen of the opera. Great name.
