Aw I don’t know why but Darla is very nice in my mind. What a lovely sound it makes.

YourWinter · 24/11/2025 10:05

I like Rosaline and Jesse from your lists. Most of the others are trying too hard to be edgy, or just wacky.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/11/2025 10:15

All your girls names I like bar Indigo. I don’t like any of the boys names

Comedycook · 24/11/2025 10:16

It’s not so much about standing out, but I’d prefer there not be multiple in their class etc.

In that case, if it's a boy called him Nigel and Sharon for a girl. I guarantee they will be the only kid in the class with that name.

Calliopespa · 24/11/2025 10:34

Primrose is my favourite.

KarriTreeSullivan · 24/11/2025 10:49

Girls favourites - Primrose, Athena, Darla
Boy favourites - Sacha, Sonny and Jesse (but not Sonny if you want unusual)

Penelope - Love this, I don't think it maters about your sister at all.
Indigo - It's ok, but almost obviously unusual if that makes sense?
Primrose - gorgeous name, I love it, beautiful happy spring flower too.
Callie (Calliope?) - I like Callie, detest Calliope, sounds to 'try hard'
Darla - American girl who works in a diner, but I kind of like it! Definitely wouldn't be any others in her class. It's a bit mad but I love it!
Vivienne - still old fashioned to me, I'd imagine a formidable lady in her late 50's.
Athena - gorgeous
Malin - sounds like a fish, I think the fish is Marlin.
Lilith - I associate this with an unpleasant TV character. But also Lilly is fairly popular, so not good if you are looking for an unusualy name as it'll get muddeld in to the Lilly's and Ellies possibly.
Rosaline - nice, sounds shkespearane and I much prefer it to Rosalind which I find quite clunky

Evander - Hollyfield? Who was he? A boxer? Might have made that up. It's ok.
Koa - la, I can only see Koala when I see this, not keen, bit silly I think,
Sonny - I love this name a lot but I thin it is fairly popular right now.
Indy - I like this but I associate it more with girls.
Sacha - Really like
Ivah - Not sure how to pronounce this, obviously if I know you and your child I'd learn
Marley - a dog, and a movie it is impossible to watch without becoming a blubbering mess. Also a really naughty boy where I live!
Jesse - Love this.

I have a normal first name but I had a bonkers surname and I loved it growing up, so many people on mumsnet say don't give weird names because you'll set them up for a lifetime of hardship and misery - it's really far from always the case! My sons first name is quite rare too, and he loves it.

Just my thoughts, good luck and congratulations.

MostlyGhostly · 24/11/2025 11:42

I like Athena and Rosaline, both unusual but classic and “proper” names. I also like Ena and Rosa as nns.

For boys, I like Ivor or Iva/ Ira ( not spelt Ivah) and Evander (nn Evan) for the same reasons.

I don’t like Indigo and Primrose, they make me think of farm animals and I know of a few dogs called Marley and Sonny, which are nice names for the dogs but I wouldn’t give these to a child.

sjutton · 24/11/2025 11:46

I have a Sacha - but it's a shortening for Alexandre in his case.

We're considering Daria for the one I'm expecting if it's a girl, I prefer that to Darla.

butterdish93 · 24/11/2025 11:47

Ooh i love these. Darla especially!
Love that you’re thinking out of the box and going for something gorgeous and different.

the only ones I don’t like are Malin (I really think this is not a nice name for anyone!) and Emory because it makes me think of a nail file 😅

Iocanepowder · 24/11/2025 11:48

I like Sacha and Darla.

Lilith a demon and generally has negative associations, hence why Frasier’s ex wife has that name. She is known for having a cold personality.

LoudPlumDog · 24/11/2025 12:40

Rosaline and nothing really off your boys list.

What is your name?

Avery
Drazik
Kurt
Jacques
Ayrton

Demelza
Mahalia
Amali
Amity
Melia
Una
Lucia
Sian

I also adore unusual names and wish I went more out there and whimsical with my children.

Darla and Malin from your girls' list really stood out to me. I taught a young girl called Darli once, and she was just wonderful.
Juni, Rosanna, Evangeline

I really like Emory (Emery) and Jesse from your boys list.
Reid, Gray, Wilder, Rafferty

Julen7 · 24/11/2025 13:10

One of my DD’s (teen) has a friend called Koa and he hates it, has recently started using his second name.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 24/11/2025 13:26

Penelope - it's ok
Vivienne - not keen
Athena - not keen
Rosaline - no, Rosalind is nice.
Malin - shipping area
Callie (Calliope?) - Callipers. No. Callie is ok.
Indigo - no
Primrose - too prim
Darla - no
Lilith - no

Sacha - ok if short for Alexander but seems a bit feminine
Jesse - not keen
Marley - ok for a labrador
Sonny - ok as a nickname
Ivah - is it a typo? Ivan, Ivo and Ivor are nice
Evander - no
Koa - no
Emory - no
Indy - no

I wouldn't pick any of them. The girl's names I quite like aren't particularly unusual. The boys' names are quite bad.
The lists seem random.

Peternell · 24/11/2025 22:44

Penelope is lovely and characterful, and you could use something quite different to Nell if shortened eg, Pepper, Poppy, Penny, Pen. I hadn't noticed Penelope becoming popular? I think it's had steady use for a very long time.
I love Indigo, Primrose, Calliope (though not so much Callie) and Lilith.
Athena will grow in popularity I assume, now it has been used by the royals.

I'm not very keen on any of your boys' names, though Sacha is my favourite. I believe Sonny is popular.

Persephone
Tanith
Xanthe
Portia
Olympia
Tamsin
Vaila
Quinn
Paloma
Patience
Ciara
Thisbe
Juno

Jory
Monte/Monty
Jago
Rollo
Ash
Neo
Zeb
Jago
Dashiell

DuchessOfNarcissex · 25/11/2025 10:44

@Peternell , Baby name explorer (shows how Penelope has increased in popularity)

SleepingStandingUp · 25/11/2025 12:44

I love
Indigo
Primrose
Callie (Calliope?)
Athena
Lilith I wanted this SO much but had boys
How about Persephone?

I love
Jesse
What about biblical names? Ezekiel, Gideon, Zebadiah etc?

I also love
Castiel or Cassius
Zachariah
Zephyr
