We have baby number two on the way, unsure on the gender but which of these girl names do you like?

Nell
Elodie (could still be Nell for short)
Eleanora
Nora
Etta
Violet
Iris

My order of preference-

  1. Iris - love this, simple, pretty, elegant
  2. Nell - so simple and classy
  3. Violet - love a “V” name. And she could be Ettie or Lettie for short.
  4. Nora - nice, straightforward name
  5. Elodie - pretty sound but I could imagine having to explain “Melody without the M” when meeting people. Also could be another Ellie.
  6. Eleanora - long so will be shortened to Ellie (which is so overdone), Nell or Nora - so she may as well be Nell or Nora on the bc.
  7. Etta - this feels incomplete as a standalone name, prefer Violet / Harriet / Henrietta etc nn Etta / Ettie

Ettie as a nn for Violet is a really nice thought.

I like Ettie better than Etta actually.

ChocoChocoLatte · 19/11/2025 15:37

I like Nell for Helena

Calliopespa · 19/11/2025 16:37

Building on @Moreteaandchocolate 's suggestion of Etta as short for Violet, I was thinking what about Violetta, with Etta for short?

I like Violet, but it is getting mentioned a lot lately, and Violetta is just that bit more unusual - and Etta really works as a nn, which means you use two of your list.

Mumofgirls2017 · 19/11/2025 23:16

Etta, Iris.

like Elodie nn Edie

mathanxiety · 20/11/2025 02:13

I love Nora and Eleanora from your list.
Violet and Iris are fine.

Not keen at all on the rest, especially Nell and Etta.
Elodie always seems to me to be a chopped off version of Melody.

Iris and Elodie

Etta, Iris.

like Elodie nn Edie

If you wanted to call a child Edie why wouldn't you do that in the first place?

Emanwenym · 20/11/2025 09:54

@Needmorelego , I agree. Edie from Elodie is quite a stretch.

I like this suggestion! Violetta, Etta

Nell - no. Sounds like a barmaid in olden times.
Elodie (could still be Nell for short)- ok.
Eleanora - lovely.
Nora - ok
Etta - not keen
Violet - not keen
Iris - ok

Funny you should say that.
My Grandma was called Nell and was a barmaid back in the old days (before I was born). 😀

Eenameenadeeka · 21/11/2025 04:39

I love Nora. I think I'd spell it Norah.
Or Elodie is very pretty too

tallyoh · 21/11/2025 08:35

Nell, all day long. I have a Nell and it’s not short for anything. It’s cute on a baby and cool on an adult. It’s a name with gumption. I don’t buy into the idea you need to give kids long names to have options, but she has a long middle name that can be shortened if she really hates it for some reason.

BoleynMemories13 · 22/11/2025 11:36

Iris is one of my favourite girls names. Second choice would be Nell.

Firebird83 · 22/11/2025 18:51

Eleanora then you have the options of Nell or Nora for short
