I've only heard ponies and dogs called Jasper, so Jude would get the vote from me.

CharlesRydersMum · 30/10/2025 09:55

Love Jude.

But then again I love Thomas Hardy!

Firebird83 · 30/10/2025 10:29

Jasper William

I much much prefer Jude.

Jude suits all classes, whereas Jasper is very upper class wannabe.

There is a reason Jude is currently a lot higher up in the name charts than Jasper.

Jude ‘suits all classes’ whereas Jasper is upper class….. Do people really need to restrict their name choices to those meeting certain ‘class’ criteria? Really? That seems such an outdated concept imo.

Both? Jude would be a good middle name for Jasper.

Agree, Jasper Jude is cool!

I know 3 little Jaspers and no Judes FWIW.

I voted Jude though as it feels friendlier.

If I hear the name Jasper, I would assume he goes to private school and has friends called Felix and Hugo.

Of course names are associated with class. Whether we like it or not, everyone has names they associate with the more well to do and names which feel down-market. There is no getting away from that, whether you personally think it's outdated or not.

There a reason why name popularity varies do much from area to area.

But should we discourage parents from choosing a name like Jasper just because some people (still) regard it as an ‘upper class’ name? That seems restrictive to me.

Jasper...goes to private school and has friends called Felix and Hugo.
That would have been about 40 years ago.

No, because it is not an ‘upper class’ name. It would fit in anywhere.
I think the idea is that the name doesn't stand out in a bad way from his/her peers. Jasper wouldn't stand out these days, but Decimus would if his friends were Alfie, Tyler and Kayden.

I am explaining why I don't like Jasper. OP is free to choose whichever name they want. Who knows, that may even be the vibe they're looking for. They asked for opinions and that is mine 🤷‍♀️

Clearly everyone's experiences are different. I wouldn't have said it if it wasn't true of my own experience of the names. You certainly wouldn't find anyone with those names in the local comps in my town. I'm not saying whether I think that's a good or bad thing, just stating the vibe Jasper has around me. You are entitled to disagree through your own experience, but that doesn't make my own experience wrong.

Jasper is lovely.

Never understood the popularity of Jude. It sounds awful and the more widely read will immediately think of Jude the Obscure. Hey Jude! Then yes the Nazi connection.

Emanwenym · 30/10/2025 16:42

@BoleynMemories13 , Hugo is a top 50 name and has been for most of the past 10 years. Felix and Jasper are in the top 75 boys' names.
They are regular names now.

I'm not disputing where they are in the charts 🤷‍♀️

Name popularity can vary dramatically from area to area. Just because a name is used fairly frequently on a national level, doesn't mean you'll meet people with that name in every walk of life. I can name so many names in the current top 100 where I don't know a single child under 15 with that name (and I know a lot of kids). Likewise I can think of lots of names where I know several children with that name, despite it not appearing in the top 100.

The national top 100 can be a slight guide as to what may be considered mainstream these days, but that doesn't mean names within it won't have a particular class which they most likely still fit into.

ImFineItsAllFine · 03/11/2025 13:26

I like Jasper, i know one age 4.

Jude is one of those names that seems to be popular on MN but I never come across in RL (for boys anyway). I'm not a fan at all and i think its far more 'wannabe posh' than Jasper.

Jasper John
Jasper almost anything.

Jude is an inferior name.

TwinklyNight · 04/11/2025 05:58

Jude.

soreshoulders · 04/11/2025 06:43

Jasper.

Observed · 04/11/2025 07:57

Jasper 😍

Giggorata · 04/11/2025 08:05

I like either of these and you have had some great suggestions for middle names.
Jasper is more unusual nowadays, which might give it the edge.

SemperIdem · 09/11/2025 23:06

Jasper all day long. It would have been the name I used if I’d had a son.

I don’t like Jude at all.

CaminoPlanner · 09/11/2025 23:09

I prefer Jasper. It's a lovely name. Jude is nice too, but Jasper is more unusual without being too out there.

TidyAmberPoster · 18/11/2025 23:42

Jasper is a dog’s name I think

averythinline · 19/11/2025 12:36

Really like Jasper.. also like Casper..
Known a few Judes ... None very nice so ruined for me! Thought it was great but sad name from Hardy!
For middle name think anything goes but would do different syllable length so either shorter
Jasper Max . or longer
Jasper Maximilian
