Kitrick...?

So our son is names Kit. My husband and I put down Kristian on the BC as my husband wanted a 'full name'. I have never gelled with Kristian despite us only calling him Kit. If I were to change it I really like Kitrick! (I actually find myself calling him that when I want to full name bim). I just wanted to know people's thoughts on the name! I think it's Scottish and means 'true victory'!

Kit could be short for Kitrick, like Pat is for Patrick!

The natural shortening for Christian, Christoph or Christopher is Chris.

I know it as an Irish surname. I don't mind it for a first name but why if you aren't going to use it would you bother, just name him kit

I would use it as a full name and call him Kitrick! Kit as a nn.

Just use Christopher!

Viviennemary · 29/10/2025 10:22

Kitrick sounds like a silly made up name. I wouldnt call a baby that..

StewkeyBlue · 29/10/2025 10:27

Just keep calling him Kit

And Kitrick as a pet name if you feel like it.

It doesn’t matter what the ‘correct’ diminution is, just call him Kit and use that as ‘known as’.

And if you call him Kitkind, Kittooloo, Kitrick, Kitso or whatever as an affectionate name at home… fine!

user1492757084 · 29/10/2025 12:37

Prefer Christopher

CrostaDiPizza · 29/10/2025 13:48

Use Kitrick as a nn for Kit.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/10/2025 13:50

How old is this child you want another chance to name?

Onefortheroad25 · 29/10/2025 13:53

Is it actually a name or did you make it up? Poor kid.

ekk100 · 29/10/2025 13:55

What about Kristoffer/Kristopher if you really don't want to use Christopher. Kitrick is awful (another Scot here who's never heard of it).

noidea69 · 29/10/2025 13:56

Stick with Kit.

Kitrick might be a cute little name you call him when he's little but doubt he'd appreciate it when a teen.

Kids will call him shitbrick

StewkeyBlue · 29/10/2025 14:17

It might cause lifelong ongoing admin hoo ha for him if you change / amend his BC.

You like Kit, just use Kit.

MrsKateColumbo · 29/10/2025 14:18

I really like it Blush

Chewbecca · 29/10/2025 10:21

Just use Christopher!

We're both not a fan of Christopher!

Not as brutal as a parent wanting to change a name from Kristian to Kitrick.

PixieandMe · 29/10/2025 15:29

Kristian is a great name and I would stick with it.

I would stick with it. But if you’re going to change it then just change the BC to Kit surely, especially if you never foresee him ever using Kristian

Great advice, thank you. 😊 I think I'm going to stick with it.

You could double barrel it.... Kit-Rick (as its clearly just two names squished together)
or Rickit?

Squirrelmirrel · 29/10/2025 17:33

I'm glad you've got a sense of humour OP. Mumsnet certainly is brutal. I don't personally warm to Kitrick but it's your son.
I would personally stick to Kristian, but if you don't feel Kristian suits him then change his BC to Kit. When people choose a given name (Kit) and then an alternative birth certificate name, it's usually to give a child a solid traditional back up for formal occasions or job interviews or to give some gravitas to an otherwise informal name.
I don't think Kitrick is giving him a good stable back up to Kit personally, it's probably giving him a name he might be embarrassed by and want to hide from people.
It's the kind of name that if used daily for his whole life it would just be his name and would be fine, but to pull it out the wood work on special occasions would probably be quite embarrassing for him as he would be met with puzzled faces. Just my opinion of course.

Bournetilly · 29/10/2025 17:42

It’s awful, just put his name down as Kit.

Zov · 29/10/2025 17:49

😱 Nooooooooooooooo! It's awful Leave it as it is.
