We are looking to give our DD2 a Cornish
name (DH's roots) but do not live England anymore, so I've no idea of what's popular in Cornwall. I currently like Tamara or Tamsin, but I've also heard Zena is Cornish but I can't find any info on the internet. Can anyone from Cornwall confirm this?

Heffagooday · 02/06/2008 17:50

I think 'Morwenna' is a Cornish name. Not sure about Zena.

HairyHeffalump · 02/06/2008 17:56

Lowenna- Means happiness in cornish

lizzielu · 02/06/2008 18:03

My DH's grandmother was Loveday but can't quite bring myself to call our DD2 that - bit too unusual.
Scorpio1: is Tamara a commonly used name, this is my favourite at the moment?

Thought as much about Zena, I was sure it wasn't cornish but just wanted to check with any Cornish people out there.

Ooops. It's a Manx name which means 'Grace'. Got my friends mixed up - should have googled it first!

Senara - the patron saint of Sennen. This is what DS would have been called if he was a girl. There's a book, called 'names for the Cornish' that we had. Unfortunately I've loaned my copy out.. It's by Christopher Bice.

Ellbell · 02/06/2008 18:14

Of the top of my head:

Demelza
Morwenna
Kerenza
Lowenna
Tamsin
Jennifer
Morvah

Don't think Zena is Cornish, but I used to know a Zelah (but she pronounced it 'Zeh-Lah', iyswim; unlike the place-name, which is Zee-Lah)

Personal favourite, if I'd had a dd3, is Tressa (which means 3rd, apparently).

Avoid Kylie. 'Ky' is Cornish for 'dog'!

Pastie?

Bunch · 03/06/2008 15:50

Morwenna is a beautiful name but then I'm biased. If you do use it, be prepared to constantly have to spell it and correct how people pronounce it. Oh, and having to explain where it comes from. But mainly people say what a beautiful name!!

ChippyMinton · 03/06/2008 15:52

Loveday is on the Cornish branch of my family tree - does anyone know anyone currently with that name?
