Baby boy name dilemma

I’m expecting a baby boy in a couple of weeks. My husband and I cannot agree on a name!

I prefer Lucas and my husband prefers Finlay. What do you think about either name? And if you’ve been in a similar position what have you done to make a decision?

Wait until you see him.

We had a firm name picked for our oldest DS. Took one look at him when he was born - he wasnt a *NameWePicked and totally changed the name. Don't regret it.

Not overly keen on Finley or Finn, reminds me of the scruffy bloke from Hollyoaks in the 90’s. I do like Lucas, Luke and Luca though.

Really like both names.

Finlay will have spelling issues and as there's multiple in each room at my nursery, I'd say a lot more common so for that reason I vote Lucas!

I prefer Lucas but like Theodore even more.

I think they are really different names- they give a different vibe to me
Finley - surfer dude
Lucas - studious
I think that’s because I associate the names with my ds’s school friends!!
Anyway, both nice names but if you can’t agree then go back to the drawing board.
Some suggestions….(appreciate you didn’t ask for them….)
Isaac
Jude
Oscar
Matthew
Ben
Joseph
Elliot

Does Theodore have to be the middle name? Could you call him Lucas Finlay or Finlay Lucas? I love both names!

Babyboynames · 21/08/2025 18:16

Thank you everyone for all your input and additional names! Definitely lots to discuss, but I’m still hoping that we will see baby and agree on the name!

I suppose that’s an option! Theodore is a version of my dad’s name though so I’d like to keep it. However, if we really can’t agree this might be a solution!

I prefer Lucas and think it sounds better with the middle name and initials.

Since you're the one doing all the hard work you should get the casting vote, particularly if he also has your husband's surname.
