Have short list for boys but cannot decide on girls.
Comments on the following would be lovely.

Sophia
Eloise
Alice
Grace
Amelia

All very pretty names.
I couldn't even say a favourite as they are all lovely.

MinPinSins · 20/08/2025 09:12

It's a solid list, very much in the classic and inoffensive territory.

Amelia is pretty overdone - I really don't think we need any more Amelias at the moment. Alice is my absolute favourite.

Poltroon · 20/08/2025 09:14

As a PP said, inoffensive.

BoleynMemories13 · 20/08/2025 09:41

Your list has a very classic feel. I don't dislike any of them but Alice and Eloise are the standout two, for me.

SleepWalkingtoSeville · 20/08/2025 09:43

Very inoffensive, as others have said. Most of them are very common. Eloise is probably the most ‘unusual’ as you hear it less. I also think it has the nicest sound to it.

Nevertrustacop · 20/08/2025 09:46

Alice is best. Although I do know a baby Alison, which is even better.

Moreteaandchocolate · 20/08/2025 09:51

All are lovely. My order would be

  1. Alice - my favourite girls name
  2. Grace - simple and elegant, I like that it’s not generally shortened (although I do worry slightly that it’s a descriptive word that wouldn’t suit everyone!)
  3. Sophia - pretty if you don’t mind the popularity, might become “Soph” as a teen
  4. Eloise - pretty but may become another Ellie / Els
  5. Amelia - Nice but popular and becomes Milly then “Mills” by teen years round here!
SunshineAndFizz · 20/08/2025 09:56

Alice is my favourite.

Personally I’ve never been a big fan of Amelia - although I know its very popular.

I think it’s the ‘meal’ sound that rubs me up the wrong way.

Emanwenym · 20/08/2025 11:27

Sophia - Overused, as is Sofia.
Eloise - a bit of a mouthful of a name. Likely to be Ellie. Gets misspelt as Elouise, which is hideous.
Alice - would be happy to name a DD Alice
Grace - Ok. Very boring as a middle name
Amelia - Ok, but I don't really like it. The Mealy bit puts me off.

Mushroo · 20/08/2025 11:31

I don’t like Eloise. No idea why but it just feels like a mouthful.

My cousin is called Alice and every time I mention her my husband responds ‘Alice? who the f* is Alice’. So yeh, there’s that.

All the others are lovely!

Wanderlust86 · 20/08/2025 11:34

Love Alice. The rest are lovely names but very popular now.

PInkyStarfish · 20/08/2025 11:35

Eloise is lovely.

Mumofteenandtween · 20/08/2025 11:46

They are all lovely. Do you like all the shortenings? I am not a big fan of “Soph” even though I love both Sophia and Sophie. No idea why.

Elle and Ellie are lovely.

Alice is harder to shorten but I really like Ally, not so keen on Al.

Grace will always be Grace. It is a beautiful name. The only concern is what if she is really clumsy? 😂 I am speaking as an adult who constantly falls over my own feet!

Amelia could be Amy, Milly or Mia. All really pretty. I did know an Amelia that was called “Meel” or “Meels” which seemed a terrible butcher of a beautiful name.

Emanwenym · 20/08/2025 12:05

Grace will always be Grace. It gets Gracie, which can sound like Gricy here.
It is a beautiful name. The meaning is but the sounds aren't.
The only concern is what if she is really clumsy? Almost a given.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 20/08/2025 12:10

I prefer Sophie to Sophia, in which case that would be my favourite. Alice is lovely too.

Grace and Amelia are WAY too popular for my taste now.

Eloise, another Ellie? No thanks.

What about Michelle or Stephanie?

Mumofgirls2017 · 20/08/2025 12:22

Sophia- pretty and well liked name though may be quite a lot depending on area
Eloise- love it (though not a fan of Ellie)
Alice- love
Grace- not a fan of this as all I’ve met aren’t typically ‘graceful’
Amelia- I personally can’t get on board but that’s due to a negative association I have. Also there’s just so many around

marshmallowfinder · 20/08/2025 12:26

Alice and Grace are wet. Eloise is OK. Sophia is pretty bland and common. Amelia is just awful. The 'mealy' noise in it is terrible plus it's a medical word meaning absence of limbs, so NO.

Daffy18 · 20/08/2025 15:05

I don’t hate your name list but but they are all very common now and a bit meh

what about Sarah or Rebecca classic names due a comeback

delightfulmusic · 20/08/2025 15:09

Grace, lovely name

ilovepixie · 20/08/2025 15:10

Alice is the nicest. The rest are very overused.

Alexandrine · 20/08/2025 16:13

Alice is one of the ultimate classics. There are very few girls names that have only occasionally left the Top 100 and Alice is one of them. It’s a fairly “can’t go wrong” name (along with choices like Elizabeth and Maria.)

I also like Sophia, very elegant and has a lovely meaning. Only issue is that between the popularity of Sophie and Sofia too, there might be more spelling confusion/mistakes.

Am ambivalent about Grace, Amelia and Eloise. They are heard often enough that they are hard to dislike (or at least the other “El” names are heard/popular enough in Eloise case), but I personally don’t like the sound of them quite as much as Alice or Sophia.

Alexandrine · 20/08/2025 16:16

Sorry it posted twice🤦‍♀️

Cocktailsandcheese · 20/08/2025 16:17

All really lovely. My favourites are Eloise and Sophia, but you can't go wrong with any of those!

Avocadohoho · 20/08/2025 16:32

I agree with the pp who said we really don’t need anymore Amelia’s. It’s so overused. Same with Grace, it doesn’t help that it’s highly overused as a middle name or hyphenated with a first name. Don’t really hear Eloise.

Sophia
Eloise

There are all very safe choices and very popular.

Id say Alice as it is more classic.
