We just cannot decide. I also love Martha but husband isn’t as keen. Would love to see others preferences and views on these names. May help me decide.

@AnotherEmma1989 I think the best way to judge is to imagine if you'd like to be called the name. I wouldn't like my name to be either Lara or Lila. Both sound a bit feeble.

I'd rather be a Scarlett, an Iris, Stella, or Venetia.

Do you like Leah?

PistachioTiramisuLimoncello · 10/08/2025 23:20

Leila is beautiful too.

How about the name Larissa which is less common than your original choices of Lara & Lila. . The name Larissa, of Greek origin, means "citadel" or "fortress". It's also associated with the ancient Greek city of Larissa.

Lara. I don't like Lila or Lyra.
Laura is nicer than Lara.

Lovely Lara - no contest. Simple, elegant, international and even pretty romantic sounding (Dr Zhivago). I’ve met a few over the years of varying ages.

Sorry but I find Martha really dowdy and unattractive sounding and Lila is super trendy at the moment so may date, as well as having spelling issues (Lyla/Lilah).

marshmallowfinder · 11/08/2025 02:43

Lara definitely.

LivingTheDreamish · 11/08/2025 03:59

Definitely Lara. It’s a good strong name. Lila just makes me think of lilo (as in beach inflatable). It never feels like a proper name to me.

JillyGiraffe · 11/08/2025 05:05

I much prefer Lara.
How about Lily or Leila?

MrsGusset · 11/08/2025 08:50

Lara is one of my favourite names.

Lila sounds a bit limp to me and the few Marthas I've personally known have all hated their name.

Lydia or Lucy??

Lila
Marta

TaborlinTheGreat · 11/08/2025 09:59

Another vote for Lara. And it's pretty much impossible to misspell or mispronounce, which is a bonus!

Thanks so much everyone - this has been really helpful.

Lila without a doubt

LancashireButterPie · 15/08/2025 01:24

Lara, great name.

Maxorias · 15/08/2025 01:30

I prefer Lila. Lara just makes me think of Lara Croft, which isn't a bad reference but it just feels like a name for another generation.

Seacatt · 15/08/2025 02:16

I prefer Lara.

OliviaFlaversham · 15/08/2025 02:24

Lara is lovely. Just my r sound isn’t great so whilst not Lawa, it comes out muffled when I say it. Would still choose it over Lila though even though it is quite a sweet name.

IndigoBluey · 15/08/2025 02:30

Lara, lovely name. Lila is nice but a bit meh like the other overused names - Olivia, Ava, Amelie.
