Eliza, Georgina, Nancy, nothing feels quite right

I'm trying to name my second daughter and nothing seems to be quite right. Current front runners are Eliza, Georgina and Nancy but I worry they're not quite 'special' enough (that's probably not the perfect way to phrase it). I met someone the other day whose daughters were Vesper and Daphne and I thought they just had a bit more magic about them, but then it feels a bit dicey to chose an unusual, romantic name for a child who might be a solid and sensible type. Has anyone got any ideas? I also love Cecily, Margot and Phoebe but can't use them for various reasons.

Marilina or Marilena is an Italian one I loved when I encountered it back when I was collecting names for potential future babies. And Marita.

Rosamond. And Jessie which is a bit of a wildcard in terms of your theme. I think those are all the names I can scavenge now while the dog scavenges walnuts!!

Jeez, isn’t that one of the ugly stepsisters in Cinderella?!

I love Eliza and can't really see how it isn't "special." Simple, pretty, classic, feminine but not overly frilly.

TBH I think the notion of "special" can lead to odd decisions when it comes to names!

Quite honestly I'm not a great fan of Phoebe. There's another thread where plenty of people are saying they like it, but to me its a very odd sound: it makes me think of feeble, amoeba and flea bag. But it is classic and we all like different things...

If you like feminine versions of boy names like Georgina, how about Edwina or Quentina for something more " special." Or Pieta? Personally I really like Henrietta.

Oh and Nancy I'm really not fond of. I know its coming back, but I'm quite surprised.

That said, anything that is not simply made-up is better than made-up imo.

MaryGreenhill · 06/08/2025 13:30

Susannah

Daphne is a pretty flower, but I think quite a heavy-sounding name? I also suspect it would get shortened to Daff (as in Daffy Duck?).

Vesper I think is bordering on made-up as a name? Is it a name?

I think you are on much firmer ground with Eliza or Georgina.

Naomi is lovely; a bit different but not too unusual

Emmeline

I think Emmeline is really sweet.

I also like Evangeline - which I think is "special."

I wanted Laelia if we had a girl, although would have been a pain for them to spell out the rest of their life, so perhaps luckily had a boy.

I also like Willabelle.

Just encountered Alwynne. I need to resurrect my Nameberry list!
