Lilian vs Lilia?

Orangerclouds · 04/08/2025 19:17

My great grandmothers name was Lilian, and we would love to use a variation of the name Lily for our DD.

We don’t know if we should full send it and go for Lilian (my reservation being, is it dated?) or go for Lilia.

We do also like Liliana.

We are thinking of Eva or Eve as a middle name as Evangeline is also a family name.

Lilian doesn't feel dated imo, go for it. Lilian Eva nice combo

Hatty65 · 04/08/2025 19:36

Lilia and Liliana both feel Eastern European rather than English, which is fine if you have that sort of heritage.

I like Lilian best.

Norastroud · 04/08/2025 19:36

Lilian Eva is a gorgeous name!
Lily Eva is also very pretty x

Moreteaandchocolate · 04/08/2025 19:45

I like Lilia best - I know a lovely teen called Lilia. Lilian does sound a bit dated to me. Lilia Eve is lovely ☺️

RuthW · 04/08/2025 19:50

Love Liliana

Lillian is fine though.

Emanwenym · 04/08/2025 19:52

Lilian is better than Lilia.

stample · 04/08/2025 20:00

Liliana is lovely! What about Lilith? I went to school with a Lil who was actually Olivia…

LucasBuck · 04/08/2025 20:07

I’ve always loved the name Lilia as I think it’s so pretty. But Lilian is not dated anymore- it’s “retro cool” now just like Adaline, Vivian etc (it just hasn’t reached the heady heights of the Top 100 yet the way similar era Evelyn, Florence etc have).

So considering Lilian is a family name, that would be the obvious choice for me (and I personally find Liliana a bit frilly). And as much as I really love classic Eve, I’d also stick with Evangeline for the middle name - Lilian Evangeline sounds nice and it’s fab to have two honour names (you are lucky your Grandma/Great-Grandma’s had such pretty names - I’d understand if you wanted to find a variation for Gladys or Hilda or something 🤣)

Lilian is a boy’s name in France. Liliane is the girls name

Cocktailsandcheese · 04/08/2025 20:25

Do you not want to just use Lily? It's a lovely name by itself, if that's what you'll call her day to day anyway. Lily Eva is lovely.

VintageMarket · 04/08/2025 20:44

Lilia was the name of a sanitary towel in the 1960s and 70s.

Emanwenym · 04/08/2025 20:48

Lily is so much nicer than the names in the OP.
Liliana is far too frilly.

Lilia was the name of a sanitary towel in the 1960s and 70s.

That was my first thought

ChocolateCinderToffee · 05/08/2025 13:10

The only Lilian I’ve ever known would be 80 now and she was rough as a badger’s arse so that’s a no from me!

trainboundfornowhere · 05/08/2025 13:26

Lilian Eve is lovely though Eva also works. I know it was not one of your suggestions but I also like Lilias Eva. I think Lilias sounds a bit more complete than Lilia however if using Lilia I would also use Eve as in my accent it sounds a little less clunky.

Hazelmaybe · 05/08/2025 13:51

Lilia

KayEmAy · 05/08/2025 19:23

Much prefer Lilia! I think Eve is a stunning middle name as well.

EmotionallyWeird · 06/08/2025 11:01

I like Lilian and much prefer it the way you spelt it, rather than worth an extra L. I've heard of one of two little girls with that name in the last few years, so I don't think it is unacceptably dated. Lilian Eva is a nice combo. I think I like Eva more than the ubiquitous Evie.

Lilia sounds pretty, but sadly it was a vague association with 80s sanpro for me. You might find other older people say the same thing. I think of Liliana as Spanish.

FatherFrosty · 06/08/2025 11:05

There’s a lot of Lily’s in my dcs years (teens) one Lilian (great name, dds friend, she’s great)
and one Liliana
they are very much current names not dated in our area.

Bramble25 · 06/08/2025 20:09

Lillian-classic and lovely

Eenameenadeeka · 07/08/2025 09:54

Id go with Lilian

user1492757084 · 07/08/2025 09:59

Lilian Eva
Lily Evangeline

BlueBulgari · 07/08/2025 12:01

I’m another one who would associate Lilia with sanitary towels.

I also someone named Lilette, which must have been a tricky one to negotiate through comprehensive school.

Emanwenym · 07/08/2025 19:34

Tesco tampons used to be called Lilia.

timoteigirl · 07/08/2025 22:10

Lilia rather than Lilian. But Liliana rather than Lilia. Not frilly at all.
