Please could you tell me your favourite girls names. I like quite traditional, strong, pretty names and am undecided on my daughters name due in a few months. Thank you

Ahh yes I forgot to add Arietty which was also on our list 😍 we had Henrietta too!

Arietty from The Borrowers?!! You do realise her cousin was called Eggletina.

Mine is Gwendolyn/Gwendoline. Never used it as I had 4 boys. Also like Céleste.

I also like Albertine, Indiana and Finn for a girl but they are a bit more "out there".

Yes there is an Arietty in the borrowers, a very brave and resourceful character from memory. I have no idea what that character's cousin's name is/was, and I'm not sure why that matters?

Arietty made our name list similarly to Harriet, Henrietta and Arabella.

The cousin's name is relevant to show all the names are made up yet sort of familiar sounding. Pod, Homily and Arietty (and Eggletina). The author had a lot of fun with those names but they are not actually names!

But Arietty could be a sweet nn for Harriet

All names are made up until they are popularised though. See - Wendy (Peter Pan), Miranda (The Tempest), Jessica (Merchant of Venice) and other such literary examples, etc etc.

It's no 'X Æ A-XII' though...

Arietty is not to your taste. That's fine.

Makingpeace · 05/08/2025 00:02

@PrincessOfPreschool I've just thought of Nevaeh as well. Popular and yet....made up.

PrincessOfPreschool · 05/08/2025 14:55

Not against it's made-upness, more it's tongue-in-cheekness (hence the eg. of Eggletina).
