help for choosing a girl's name

Hi ! my husband and I are expecting our sixth child, a little girl. Out of the names we picked, we can't decide which one to choose.

We live in a French-speaking country but we generally like names that are germanic-sounding.

For reference, our children are called Aurèle, Judith, Zéphyr, Felix, and Harriet.

The names we picked are Betty, Elaeis, Elsie, Ethel, Jane, Johan, Mildred, and Nigelle. My husband also really likes Lune (which means moon in french), but I am not too sure about this one.

Thanks for your help!

Athena😊

I like Lune, Harriet, Jane and Elsie the best... maybe Louise might fit the bill?

Elaeis Is pretty. Not keen on any of the others. Lune I would say is nice, but whilst spelt differently (and much prettier), in English it would sound like Loon - “a silly or foolish person”. So it depends if that will be an issue for you if you’re not living in the UK.

ClarasSisters · 12/07/2025 14:38

Johan and Nigelle sound to me like 'we wanted a boy' I'm afraid.
Personally prefer Elizabeth to Betty (though I guess you could go the full name on the birth certificate, calling her by nickname route and she can pick for herself when older).

Out of the ones you've said here I like Elsie. And Lune.

Beautifulsunflowers · 12/07/2025 14:44

How about Johanna? although you do already have a Judith so maybe not another j name.
Sophie/ia
Carlotta
Niamh
Monique/Monica
Victoria
Rachael
Anastasia

Ddakji · 12/07/2025 14:48

Thank you for your message ! We do not live in the UK, but I am speaking English to them, so I'll keep that in mind, thank you very much for telling me this !

Thank you for your message ! I totally understand what you mean for Johan and Nigelle, although Nigelle is a feminine word in French! We picked Betty instead of Elizabeth because our oldest children have rather short names, but I understand the nickname thing. I'll keep this in mind.

Elsie is lovely, that would be my choice.

Betty, Ethel, Jane and Mildred are dated names to me. Elaeis would be a spelling / pronunciation nightmare if she moved to the UK. Johan and Nigelle are too masculine sounding imo.

Mumofgirls2017 · 12/07/2025 16:34

I like Betty though Ethel goes better with your others imo

LucasBuck · 12/07/2025 23:11

Hmm, you might be better asking on a name board from your country as I’m afraid only Elsie, Jane and Betty would likely be considered as useable by UK posters, (although some might consider all but popular Elsie as still being a bit old fashioned).

Mildred, Ethel and Nigelle are really horribly dated I’m afraid, Johan looks masculine (the feminine would be spelt Joanne here instead) and Lune might get pronounced as “Loony” as well as “loon” (and both are insults). Elaeis looks okay but few in the UK would be able to spell it and would have to guess the pronunciation.

If you like Mildred and Ethel, you might like Maud/Maude? (all are names from the famous kids books The Worst Witch🤣). But Maud is becoming considered more retro cool in the UK along the lines of Jane and Betty.

mathanxiety · 12/07/2025 23:25

Mildred and Ethel are so bad they're comedic.

Would you consider -
Aude
Mathilde
Clothilde
Frida
Greta
Anna

RogueFemale · 13/07/2025 00:01

Jane is lovely. Don't like the others.

Selfsetfree · 13/07/2025 00:18

Elsie is lovely!

Eenameenadeeka · 13/07/2025 09:45

Elsie Lune

ChocolateCinderToffee · 13/07/2025 11:52

I like Elaeis and Lune. What about Laetitia?

Thank you for your message! Laetitia is such a beautiful name that I love! unfortunely two friends of mine are called Laetitia, so I fear that it would not make it in our list. Thank you very much for the suggestion though😊
