Absolutely love August, it’s my current favourite boys name.

Are you sure you say the month with a strong emphasis on the second syllable? I think in most varieties of English, a native speaker would say AW-gust for the month and the girl’s name and aw-GUST for the adjective and the boy’s name.

To be honest if I say it out loud I hear no difference between AW-gust and aw-GUST.
They sound exactly the same to me 🤔🤷

Emanwenym · 08/07/2025 11:06

@Needmorelego , the month is AU-gust. The stress is on the first syllable, in the same way as April is AYP-ril not Ayp-RIL.

Sorry but I don't hear much difference in those two ways of saying April either 🤔
@Ribecx sorry your thread has been hijacked by the pronunciation police.
Lucas is still my favourite, followed by Rowen.

Emanwenym · 08/07/2025 11:11

@Needmorelego , How about Janet and Janette or Daniel and Danielle?

As to referring to the 'pronunciation police', has it crossed your mind that they might be trying to help you? And it's Rowan not Rowen.

Janet and Janette do sound different - I think of them as different names.
Daniel and Danielle sound the same. One is a male name, one female but they sound the same.

Emanwenym · 08/07/2025 11:20

All the Daniels and Danielles I know, and I know many, are mispronouncing their names then, as is everyone else around them.

Apologies about this miss spelling of Rowan/Rowen - that was likely my phone autocorrect.
I just meant that some people get a bit over the top about how certain names "should" be pronounced when actually the minor differences in sounds are usually just down to people's accents.
Whatever way the OP says the name August is how she pronounces it with her accent and that way will be correct.

Explain the difference?
Seriously l've known several Daniel's and several Danielle's over the years and they all pronounced their name the same way.

What's the 🙄 for?
I genuinely don't hear a difference between Daniel and Danielle if I say them out loud.

Needmorelego · 08/07/2025 10:34

Huh? How is the name pronounced?
I didn't know it was different.
@Ribecx I like Lucas best.

It’s like Augustus but without the us at the end

Yes but apparently that's different from August the month 😂
August (name)
August (month)
All the same to me 🤷
@Ribecx apologies again. Your thread got derailed.
I'm going to bow out now.
Congratulations on baby - whatever his name ends up being 🙂👶

SupposesRoses · 08/07/2025 13:08

Not trying to be the pronunciation police at all, but I would have been so embarassed to realise once the baby was here that I wasn't pronouncing his or her name correctly. I would have felt like I let them down. I assume OP or someone else reading might be the same.
Perhaps the people who think they pronounce August the month and august the the adjective the same aren't used to expressing emphasis in text? On this video you can hear the pronunication. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Z4XuAFob_d4

Needmorelego · 08/07/2025 13:20

@SupposesRoses but if it's down to accents whatever the parents use will be the correct one.
My name can be pronounced slightly differently depending on accent.
My aunt (my mums sister) says it slightly differently to how my mum says it because she has a posh accent (not one she would have had as a child).
Who is right? Who is wrong?
Both are. It's just the accent.

Haha, thanks and it's OK.

I would pronounce the name August the same as the month anyway!

(Although for Augustus the emphasis is Au-GUST-us, I think it sounds a bit strange to say Au-GUST when it's just August!)

Lucas - I really like Lucas, prefer It to the increasingly popular Luca I think. People on here often say it rhymes with mucous but that has never been an issue for any Lucas i have ever met and its an u hears of name

Rowan - really like but coming across them more and more which puts me off a little.love that it can be shortened to Roo

Robin - don't get the love but Robin is becoming very popular in my area surprising, with both boys and girls. Robin Hood is a cool namesake

Lysander - gorgeous sound and look, but a braver choice than your others

August. I like. Like Auggie but not Gus though

Have you considered Rufus and Leander. They seem like they would fit your style. Also Rohan

toastofthetown · 08/07/2025 14:56

Lucas - wet and bland. By far the worst on your list for me
Rowan - I like Rowan, but it’s fairly popular, as is Rowan so might blend in a bit
Robin - love it, my little boy was almost a Robin
Lysander - my favourite boys name but my husband is less convinced so if that’s on the table for you I’d choose it in a heartbeat
August - love this one again and if I have another boy I’ll try hard to convince my husband on it

Cocktailsandcheese · 08/07/2025 17:43

Lucas is my favourite from your list. Really dislike August and Lysander. The others are nice enough.
