Estella?

I posted a while ago asking for opinions on the name Flavia. Turns out my partner doesn't like it, nor any of the other 20ish names I suggested. So I made a new list and the only name he had a positive comment for was Estella. He actually said he had been thinking of Estella or Stella, but I immediately shot down Stella because I know my sister's immediate association will be the lager and I just can't get that out of my head.

What do people think of Estella? Still too close to Stella or does the extra E help?

Estella is my MIL middle name and my surname! Great name!

Are you German?
Estella is lovely I think.

I'm not, my partner isn't and his surname is very German. We chose to use his for our first daughter because nobody here can pronounce mine and subsequent children automatically get the same surname if both parents are the same.

My DH was very quick to dismiss names but not very food at making suggestions.

Which names are on the list that he’s made?

He hasn't made a list yet this time - Estella is the only name he's mentioned that he was considering, which he said after seeing it on my list. The ones I remember from last time are Salomé (I'm not a fan), Mila (but he's changed his mind now because there are 3 at our daughter's nursery) and Medea (I find the association with a woman who killed her own child much worse than Great Expectations!)

Estelle (pronounced Eh-stell) doesn't flow right with the surname and it will end up as Estell-uh in German anyway so we might as well just go with the Estella spelling to begin with.
Same with names like Caroline (Ca-ro-Leen-uh) and Anne (Ann-eh).

I agree with your reasoning and I think the name is great.

I like Estella! She came good in the end didn't she? And I don't think most people would recognise it now. And it's a lot better than Medea which os dreadful.

bohemianblasphemy · 29/06/2025 18:40

Also Salome - his name choices are all very of a theme...which is very strange

I recently heard the name Estera and thought it was beautiful. Similar vibe!

NormaSears · 29/06/2025 18:59

Estera made me think 'hysteria'.

I like it but much prefer Estelle. Sounds more chic.

Estella sounds way, waaay more chic. Incredible what the impact of an extra letter can be, but there you go.

Stella is a totally different vibe altogether IMO.

Maybe check that there's no HRT or contraceptives called Estella where you are. It is a very nice name but I could easily imagine an oestrogen preparation having that name.
