Merryn - we're not Cornish?

Anyone in Cornwall, is Merryn super popular there? We're Welsh and there is technically Welsh history to the name too but mostly it's Cornish, especially I know it's a place name there...

I'm wondering if it's a bit like Ffion for example, that's super popular in Wales but unusual elsewhere?

Would it be strange for us to use it when we have no real connection to Cornwall? We have friends there though and idk if they would think it's odd 😅 I'm probably overthinking lol

I really like it, and both Merry and Ren as nicknames.

exasperatedflatmate · 26/06/2025 15:33

I’m Cornish and don’t know any Merryns. And wouldn’t be concerned if someone non-Cornish used it.

Beautiful name!

loobyloo1979 · 26/06/2025 20:52

Great name. I'd never heard of it. Go for it!!

CantFollowInstructions · 27/06/2025 09:30

I think it's lovely. It was on my list for my current pregnancy but partner isn't a fan.

Sleepypen · 27/06/2025 14:33

Assuming it is prounounced like Erin with an M at the front? If so, that's lovely

Kumquatzest · 04/07/2025 19:48

It's a lovely name. I wouldn't worry about not being Cornish. There are plenty of children named Rhys who are not Welsh, Francesca who are not Italian etc.

Fordian · 04/07/2025 19:58

Say it like Demelza from Poldark would!

‘Merryn! Merryn? Where you at? C’mon, maid!’

🤭

Emanwenym · 04/07/2025 19:59

It looks like Mervyn

NotrialNodeal · 22/07/2025 11:44

I didn't know it was a cornish name. If I had guessed I would think it was Welsh so i say go for it!

Welsh and Cornish are quite closely related languages.

pambeesleyhalpert · 23/07/2025 08:28

It’s fine! I do prefer Mabli though and that’s welsh!

Aliksa · 23/07/2025 08:41

It’s a lovely name. I don’t think it’s so obviously Cornish that you’d get judged for it.

Emanwenym · 23/07/2025 08:43

If it was a Welsh name it would be masculine.

WonderingWanda · 23/07/2025 08:44

I think it's lovely, go for it.

2024BabyNameIndecision · 23/07/2025 08:49

I really like Merryn, but I already have an Erin so it definitely won't feature on our list if we have another 😅 Merry is a cute nn.

Emanwenym · 23/07/2025 15:49

Erin is nicer than Merryn.

Elly2297 · 23/09/2025 20:20

Sorry, I know this post is from a little while ago!
I am from Scotland and had always loved the name Mirren but someone said it reminded them of the football team and from then on I couldn’t hear the name without thinking of the football team. That’s when I found the name Merryn and I think I love it more than Mirren. I really wanted a Scottish name but I think it does sound a little Scottish!

BunnyRuddington · 28/09/2025 09:28

Don’t worry about not being Cornish. My name is Scottish and my DSister’s is French. I don’t think my DPs ever gave it a thought and nobody has ever said “Oi Bunny, why have you got a Scottish name and you’re not from there?”

Emanwenym · 28/09/2025 10:53

@BunnyRuddington , maybe your DP isn't interested in names. Maybe your name is one that's more popular than Merryn.
if i met someone called Mawgan, I'd ask if there was a connection with Cornwall.

FrothyCothy · 28/09/2025 10:56

Was top of my list but DH wasn’t on board - I love it and am jealous you get to use it 😆
