We really like Madeleine, aren’t worried about ‘Maddy’ as a nn, and prefer this spelling. Is it a classic name though? We also like:

Penelope
Elizabeth

Would appreciate your opinions.
Thank you ☺️

I like it. Prefer Elizabeth and Penelope though, in that order

Startthecar · 21/06/2025 23:32

Madeleine is a lovely name, and of course it is considered to be a classic name!
I too prefer it spelled the French way.
Elizabeth is also a timeless name with so many variations; that's one of its strong points imo.

coxesorangepippin · 21/06/2025 23:45

I'd go with Pénélope

Pemba · 21/06/2025 23:52

Madeleine is gorgeous. I'd pick that. Yes it's classic I would say.
Elizabeth very classic of course, loads of nicknames. Good safe choice.
Not mad on Penelope, it's very popular now but I don't really like the sound of it, and 'Penny' is sort of... mid-century perky. Slightly twee. Well it's OK I suppose. Prefer Jenny tbh.

DiscoBeat · 21/06/2025 23:57

Madeleine is a lovely name but I always think about it starting with Mad. I'm a bit funny about names which have other not so cute names within them iyswim.

I wanted out daughter to be called Madeleine. I love it. H (I don't like him today so no 'D') wouldn't allow it because of .. Madeleine Mccann 😥

Beautiful name! My H wouldn’t allow it as well.

feelingbleh · 22/06/2025 00:44

I dont like penelope i like madeline but prefer maddison

Enough4me · 22/06/2025 00:49

Madeleine is beautiful. I prefer it this was and pronounced Mada-lyn rather than Mada-lane.

LancashireButterPie · 22/06/2025 00:50

Mad Elaine? Nah 👎

Empress13 · 22/06/2025 00:55

Madeleine Elizabeth sounds nice

DramaAlpaca · 22/06/2025 01:12

Classic French name and perfectly nice, as are Penelope and Elizabeth. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. My only advice, given that they are all long names, is consider which diminutives you'd be happy with.

zaicandy · 22/06/2025 01:13

I would automatically think of Madeleine McCann, sorry. Could it be spelled a different way?

Winegumsandbullseyes · 22/06/2025 01:35

The one I know is a Madeline, pronounced Mad-eh-leen.

mathanxiety · 22/06/2025 02:58

Madeleine is a gorgeous classic.

I'd pronounce it Mad-uh-leen, which is how my three relatives who have had this name pronounced it.

There are no guarantees when you pick a name that it isn't the name of the next serial.killer or tragically missing small child. I wouldn't be put off a name because of an association with a past case.

Everlore · 22/06/2025 02:58

Madeleine is a beautiful name, my lovely big sister is called this so it naturally has positive connotations for me but, independently of that, I think it's a classic timeless name.
Penelope was one of my first choices of name for our baby, though we didn't go for it in the end. I was mainly inspired by the story of Penelope from Greek mythology but people kept going on about Penelope Pitstop which understandably put my husband off the name. We eventually went for another gorgeous name which we're both very happy with.

Knowsley · 22/06/2025 11:12

@coxesorangepippin But that's Pennay-lop.

Moreteaandchocolate · 22/06/2025 17:25

I really like Madeleine and I also like Maddie for short, but I wouldn’t use it if you don’t like that nn.

Penelope is my favourite and I love Penny.

Elizabeth is a safe choice, a can’t go wrong name.

BoleynMemories13 · 22/06/2025 18:02

I like Madeleine and prefer this spelling too. It's my favourite on your list.

TeenagersAngst · 22/06/2025 18:10

Love Madeleine and Elizabeth. Less keen on Penelope.

Also love Maggie and Genevieve which I feel
have similar vibes.

I like this too. Madeleine is lovely.

KayEmAy · 22/06/2025 20:12

Madeleine is lovely and that is my favorite spelling as well, that being said if you're not keen on Maddy I may save it for a middle name.

Elizabeth Madeleine is gorgeous

AnneMarieW · 22/06/2025 22:21

Elizabeth is beautiful and as timelessly popular as you can get. Amazing historical namesakes, amazing choice of nicknames, very international (albeit more the Elisabeth spelling)- it’s pretty much the can’t-go-wrong option for girls, like Thomas, William or James are for boys.

Madeleine is perhaps a bit more interesting and I really like it too - very elegant. If you aren’t put off by “Maddy” which is the reason a lot of people aren’t keen! then it’s also a great option, especially with this spelling (Madeline is less widely used and often pronounced differently). It’s not a timeless classic like Elizabeth (few names are) but it’s classic enough in that it’s a name with a long history of use, not currently trendy but that doesn’t feel dated to me.

Personally I really dislike Penelope. I appreciate its ancient history but the “pee” sound is too strong for me and it’s newly trendy to boot so may risk sounding dated in future. I admit the “Penny” diminutive is very cute though.

Personally I hate “Maddy” so it would be Elizabeth for me.
