Hate DD’s planned baby name. Is it ever ok to say that?

Op it’s really not that bad. In fact it’s cute. Most people wouldn’t know the greek mythology.
They will think it’s short for something like Lois or Lola.

I think it’s kind of cool! But yes will probably get mistaken for “Lo” a lot when written. I wouldn’t say anything!

I am amazed that anyone thinks that Io is a bad name or that a child with that name will be teased with it. Maybe it’s my London bubble but seems fairly run of the mill to me? This isn’t the 1950s, we are a multicultural society with diverse names. I think it’s beautiful.

If your daughter is a classicist she will be well aware of the myth. So saying to her “oh, isn’t she raped by Zeus?” is just going to sound nasty. I agree with the two previous posters who say that most women in classical mythology are more than victims and that it’s kind of misogynistic to define them only that way.

Basically, keep your beak shut or it could damage your relationship.

My grandparents always called me by a cute nickname (not linked to my name at all), even adult 🥰 maybe they hated my name? 🤣🤣

I would say something. You need to think of your poor dgc. If my parents called me something like that I would grow up resenting them for it.

Also to add, my parents also chose names from Greek mythology and history for me and my 3 siblings, so maybe I'm too biased 😅

She won't be the only one with a Greek name. Greek and Disney names are on the up at the moment, little Io will be one of many.

Being called Ian, Andy and Gary would be embarrassing now, but those were very popular names at the time.
Nobody mixed up Ian up there with Lan, so don't worry. Trends change and you're a whole generation older than your daughter: you would be embarrassed but her generation thinks it's cute!

I think it’s lovely. I’ve only known one person called Ɪo and nobody called her 10 or lo because they’d either seen her name written down with a proper capital i with serifs like this: Ɪ ,or they’d been introduced and heard her name. The emphasis is on the first letter - EYE-oh - so nothing like Old Macdonald 🙄

OP, there were lots of rapes mentioned in mythology. People still use the names of those women, eg Cassandra, Demeter, Persephone, to name a few. I wouldn’t let that aspect worry me.

I know an Io and she’s a gorgeous person and I’ve always loved her name. I think you’ll end up loving it too once you meet her (the baby, rather than my friends daughter). It’s never been thought of as outlandish or even slightly out there. Just a pretty and unique name (in a good way).

a bit outing here, but my name is Karen, named after Karen Carpenter but I’m going to stick my neck out and say that’s a much more difficult name to live with these days 😉

It’s different now, children don’t get teased for their names like being unusual they did when I was growing up - not in London, where I live anyway. And I work with children and I hear a lot of very quirky names, and nobody says anything.

You should not say how much you hate it.

It's terrible but say nothing. At the end of the day it's just a name, you'll get used to it.

I still wouldn't say anything to your daughter about not liking the name. She probably won't change her mind and she will just be upset.

I had some rather head turning names on my list prior to ever having children. All girls names.
I'm pregnant with my 3rd boy. I now realise how ridiculous these names I had were. I wouldn't say anything, she has plenty time to change her mind if she isn't pregnant yet (ps all my kids have pretty normal, common names apart from DC3 who's is slightly different but not unheard of)

Say something. She doesn’t have to agree with you. My mum told me she didn’t like the name we picked. I just ignored her. Friend told her dd she didn’t like grandsons name. It was changed ( had a meaning the mum wasn’t aware of) no big deal or drama.

On the one hand I want to say kids don’t get picked on for unusual names these days.
