We are having a baby girl VERY soon. I am now 38 weeks and we still can’t decide on a name. Thinking of something flowery/summer/sea vibes but not super common. Please please help

How exciting! Lots of lovely suggestions on this thread ( Cecily, Violet, Cordelia, Callista, Juniper). Let us know what you decide!

UName38 · 08/06/2025 18:58

You have obviously put a lot of thought in, good lists here and I’m sure you’ll have looked as well. Can you narrow down to maybe 5 names you like and meet any other criteria (popularity, sound fine with the surname) Then wait until the baby is here and decide.

Don’t stress about it, once you meet her a perfect name might just come to you. We really struggled to find a name for DS1, but eventually we found the right name for him. I’m probably not a lot of help, I like classic names, Laura, Lucy, Sarah, Sophie, Amy, Felicity, Rebecca, Emily. Many congratulations btw.

We didn't decide until ours arrived. Each time - we needed to see them to make up our minds.

If I were naming a baby girl now I like:

Daphne
Isolde
Hebe
Marnie
Joy

I looked at my family tree recently and was surprised to see Caroline in the 19th, 18th and 17th Centuries and more Hannahs than I expected among all the Elizabeths, Elizas, Mary-Annes and Marthas.

Profpudding · 08/06/2025 20:10

I 100% agree you have to have a look at her before deciding on her name.
Especially with your First, it’s much easier with the second because you’ve got a rough idea of what they’re gonna look like, I wasn’t shocked by number two and three looks. I’d already seen that face.

Well uncommon sea linked names are easy - from Shakespearean Nerissa and Marina, to Cornish Morwenna and Welsh Morgan/Morgana to Basque Nereia and Spanish/Latin Marisa; there are loads of gorgeous underused sea related names but those are particular faves of mine.

Equally unusual flower/floral shrub names are fairly easy- Linnea, Dahlia, Cassia, Acacia, Azalea, Zinnia are my faves; but you could also go the traditional floral linked route like Lilia or Rosalie or Rosamund.

Unusual summer vibe names are much harder- maybe lovely but very rare Scandi name Sunniva? Or classic Susanna isn’t used as much as it used to be and has the nn Sunny.

Actually you could even combine all 3 themes if you used something like Marisa, as May is a nn for it - and May is both a flower and quite summery (well late Spring 🤣).
