Octavia vs Emerald

I can’t decide between these two names for baby daughter. I love them both but my issue with Octavia is I don’t like any of the shortenings. Help me choose!

I prefer Emerald, Emmy as a nn.

Octavia is ok but the shortenings aren’t great.

Ophelia perhaps?

Ooh I love Emerald. I love jewel names and colour names generally.

It is a jewel, but so are Ruby and Amber,. Also Rose, Lily, Poppy and Daisy are flowers, and they are all popular names.

I prefer Emerald.

I think they are both lovely.

I really like Octavia and it isn't a name I would even think to shorten.

I hadn't thought of the Skoda connection but two of Jilly Cooper books feature characters of these names .

What about Pandora , or has that been taken by the jewellery brand .

In another existence I;d have called my DD "Mercedes" , not that she'd have appreciated it !

Emerald's OK. I quite like jewel names - for instance DH has a cousin called Amethyst.

Not keen on either of them. If I had to choose, Emerald.

I love both names! Throwing our Saphire, which I know MN hates but is my favourite gem name.

Emerald - you have Emerald Fennell (Saltburn) and Emerald O’Hanrahan (Emma in The Archers) as well known Emeralds.

Octavia? Poor kid. So try hard. Emerald slightly less hideous.

Esmerelda I associate with hunchback of notre dame. Although it didn’t bother Ryan Gosling!

I do like Ophelia but it’s a bit tragic and ‘I feel ya…’

Baby was going to be Octavia with middle name Emerald but now she’s here I think she might actually be a little Emerald but I can see it’s quite a divisive name.

I love Octavia…and Via would be a cool nickname. My neighbour has a teenage ‘Olivia’ who goes by Via.

Emerald is a ‘notch down’ to Octavia, but still lovely. So, whichever you choose would be nice.

Octavia was on our long list for DD. Emerald wasn’t, but Sapphire was 😁

I don't think that what some car manufacturer has decided to name their latest model should influence your name choices, don't worry. Otherwise there'd be a lot of lovely names we couldn't use. Zoe, for example.

The name Octavia has been around since Roman times obviously.

Definitely Emerald.

I really like octavia until i realised its a Skoda model. Dont let that put you off though!

I like emerald,
But prefer similar but less "out there" names like jade and Esmeralda (apparently means emerald in Spanish)

Octavia is the best.

Emerald could be a nick name for Emma if she has green eyes.
