What do you do if you can’t find a name?

I've spent a lot of time on baby name websites, talking to DH and thinking about names but I CANNOT find one single bloody name that I’d like to call my DD (due in a few weeks). I have one DD and knew what name I wanted straight away (not a childhood dream name, it just came to me as soon as I found out I was pregnant) but I haven’t seen one name I would want to call this DD. I don’t know if it’s because it’ll be my last dc for sure or DH’s lack of suggestion (although we have different ideas of what is a ‘nice’ name!) but I seriously can’t see anything I like. What do I do? I have seen a few names that are nice enough, they’re okay but I wish I could find a name that I love as much as I loved DD 1’s name, I feel bad that hers just came to me and I loved it so much but I can’t find anything I like for this DD Sad I’ve scrolled every ‘Top 1000 girl names’ but I still can’t find anything Sad I don’t have anything sentimental that I feel the need to call her (neither does DH).

I love floral names (DH doesn’t but DD1 is a flower name), it needs to have an I in the name. Willow and Emily are examples of names I like but not enough to make me think that it’s the one. The only name I really liked is Rosie but DH doesn’t like it.

Well- to literally answer the OP's question. We could not find any names we both liked for either of our 2 Dcs. So we named Ds1 after his paternal grandfather and DS2 after my father.

Both names are perfect. Utterly perfect. They suit them brilliantly and I can't imagine any other names for them. It's perhaps a little unimaginative but it worked for us.

My favourite floral girls name was always Prjmrose, and had we had a girl I'm sure that would have ended up being her name.

Here was our 'short' list;
Tabitha
Willow
Rosie
Emily
Beatrice
Elizabeth
Matilda
Poppy
Daisy
Iris
Charlotte
Thalia
Primrose
Peggy
Alba
Enid

Good luck - I know it's easy to say when you aren't going through it yourself right now (alas, we had boys and occasionally I wish I'd gone with slightly more unusual names or added in an extra middle name - hindsight and all, although I do love their names) but the right name will present itself - I don't think you can be 100% on any name until they arrive, and even then it may take a few hours, days or even weeks!

Mama052025 · 26/05/2025 16:33

Our DD1 is Lilia (middle name Rose) and we always get compliments on her name. Slightly more unique than Lily but still that floral pretty vibe.
It's so much pressure picking a name especially when you can't find one you absolutely love. I was having the same trouble but have just had a little boy and you always settle on a name and love it when you see their face and that they suit it. Take your time - my baby boy didn't have a name for a week until we were 100% sure. X

We were in the exact same situation as you a few months ago. Our dd2 was nameless for a week after birth because we just couldn’t decide. In the end we just used a few names we liked to see which suited her - Emmie was the winner! Maisie, Sienna and Lydia were contenders.

Floral/nature names

Ivy
Violet (Vi)
Hazel
Daisy
Lilly / Lillia
Rosa
Fern
Dahlia
Heather
Isla
Maeva
Olive
Poppy
Primrose (Prim)

It’s so hard! Good luck!

I really love floral/nature names too. My partners daughter is called Willow which is nice but so so common now, there’s three Willows in my sons Preschool class.
I wanted something floral-y for our daughter who was born in November last year, I was aiming for something not super common but not crazy out there, I really liked Fauna/Fawn originally but went off it halfway during the pregnancy. We ended up calling her Fleur, which I love, and her nickname is FlergyYergy 😂

PensionedCruiser · 26/05/2025 17:04

What about Rosalea? You could shorten that to Rosie too.

"Rosalea is a feminine name meaning "rose meadow" or "rose in a meadow." It's a variation of Rosalie, and combines the Latin word "rosa" (rose) with "lea" (meadow). The name evokes the image of a beautiful flower in a natural setting, symbolizing natural beauty and delicate femininity."

My 1 year old is Hollie 🙂 I absolutely love it and it wasn't even on my list when we were TTC and then it went on it when I fell pregnant and the more I said it the more I loved it and then didn't use a name we thought we were set on!

I know two of my pals who didn't really have the perfect name for either of their daughters.

One pal had a couple of back up names, then when the baby was born, said oh she looks like a Grace (Grace was not even mentioned in the names list), so that was that problem solved.

Then my other pal had a daughter a few years later and the nurse said oh what a Bonny child, and she was thus named Bonny.

Sometimes it's good to have a backup, but maybe you will just see her lovely face and the name will appear? 🙏

Kiki25 · 26/05/2025 18:52

I couldn’t find a single name i liked with my first son so when my daughter came to meet her brother after he was born and still without a name (she had turned five 3 weeks earlier) i asked her what she thought his name should be and she said Toby so thats what we called him. She also chose her other brothers name last year which is Oscar. Her name is Freya incase you haven’t thought of that one or been given it as a sugestion. She was originally going to be called Evie though.

Kiki25 · 26/05/2025 18:56

What about Ivy that would have been my youngest son’s name had he been a girl. Other names we liked were Millie, Mollie and Sadie

I had no idea what I was going to call my daughter before she was born. It was really hard not having a clue! But, when I saw her I knew she was Rosie! Never even occurred to me to name her that! Was not on my list of names. It just suited her. We called her Rosanna as her full name, but she’s always been known as Rosie. I guess what I’m trying to say is, when she’s born, something might come to you that you hadn’t expected. What suits her! This is from a mum of 4 (she is the last baby) who had plans for names for all the others!
