Hi everyone, I’m keen to hear your thoughts on our list of possible names so far, as well as any suggestions. We have a bit of a mixture of classical/longer ones and others but do tend to like more traditional names. I’m still early in pregnancy so have quite a while to still decide, hence the long list! Thanks :)

  • Catherine (Kate/Kit for nn)
  • Frances (Frankie)
  • Margaret (Meg)
  • Rosemary (Romy)
  • Carys
  • Mara
  • Rhiannon
  • Maia
  • Sylvia/Sylvie
  • Iris
  • Cara
  • May
  • Clare
  • Nina
  • Gabrielle
  • Sofia

I have a Nina so this is my favorite from your list! I also love Iris and Sylvia/Sylvie.

As an aside, no one has ever referred to her name sounding like an ambulance. They haven’t used the two tone siren on emergency vehicles since the early 00’s and most young people will have never heard that sound.

Catherine (Kate or Kit) or Carys - both lovely - grown up but fun at the same time and currently unusual.

  • Frances (Frankie) - nice but quite popular
  • Margaret (Meg) - Ok
  • Rosemary (Romy) - Romy will date
  • Mara - it’s a demon. Also sounds like a barmaid
  • Rhiannon - nice but I think you need to be welsh
  • Maia - way too many Mays/Maisies
  • Sylvia/Sylvie - I like it, maybe Sylvia as her full name. Sylvie is quite popular
  • Iris - lovely but way overdone
  • Cara - Ok, bit nothingy
  • May - nice but way overdone
  • Clare - Ok
  • Nina - nothingy
  • Gabrielle - nice but Gaby is grim, and they all seem to be Gaby or Ella - which is way overdone
  • Sofia - lovely but done to death

Lovely list, but Carys stands out to me <3

Thank you guys :)
Carys was a very close runner up for our first daughter, for some reason it isn’t as high on the list this time round. But I’ll maybe just take a few weeks and try not to think about it too much, see where my thoughts settle! Would ideally like to get the shortlist down to 2-3 choices before baby arrives but we will see.

I love the idea of a longer name and a more informal nn like Margaret (Maggie) and Francesca (Frankie). Also really like Maia and Iris.
Sylvia seems dated to me but I know 2 little girls with the name so perhaps it is coming back. I'm from Wales and like Rhiannon but it is probably an older name here, not that that's a bad thing. Not a fan of Nina

If you have an Alexandra already then I’d be looking for something similarly classic and traditional so K/Catherine nn Kit is a great choice. Margaret also fits well although feels quite dated in comparison (but perhaps the myriad of cooler nn’s available from Meg to Mae to Greta might make up for that). Francesca rather than Frances also fits too imo - for some reason I generally like a longer name to match Alexandra. I do have a soft spot for Sylvia (Sylvie) too , although again it’s perhaps a bit dated compared to more classic Alexandra.

Otherwise I’d expect the sister of an Alexandra to be named something like Christina (Kit/Christy), Caroline (Carrie/Callie), Cecilia (Cici), Victoria (Vita), Georgina (Gigi), Juliet (Jules/Letty), Charlotte (Lottie), Marianne (May) etc.

Nice list - Catherine and Clare are my favourites, and I also like Carys.

Some other suggestions
Carey
Carmen
Frida
Susannah
Jane
Melissa

Catherine (Kate/Kit for nn) : nice, versatile but quite ordinary.
Frances (Frankie) : not keen on Frances but I like Frankie, would personally go for Francesca
Margaret (Meg) :Hate Margaret, like Meg.
Rosemary (Romy): too twee for my taste.
Carys: love this!
Mara: ok, nice quirky name.
Rhiannon: like but don’t love this.
Maia: life time of correcting spelling and pronunciation.
Sylvia/Sylvie: another twee name.
Iris: no
Cara: Ok
May: dull
Clare: also dull
Nina: Personal dislike of this name due to experience but objectively it’s pretty,
Gabrielle: love this but love even more Gabriella:
Sofia: love this but quite popular at the moment.

So for me I’d vote Carys or Gabriella from this list.
