thoughts on Maria

I keep coming back to Maria... then drifting away.. then returning again. What do you think about Maria

I like it a lot. West Side Story, Sound of Music, classic name.

Because I love giving people nicknames. I never even use my DS's full name, only nicknames, but not so with DD. Sometimes Maria Paria for the rhyme but that's a bit dull.

Masha yeah, Mia and Maia I know as names in their own right, and never heard Ria. I suppose I mean more along the lines of a shortened version of Maria, which I suppose works but not in the way its pronounced where I am, which is different from the English way of pronouncing Maria.

In my country its extremely common to use shortened (occasionally lengthened) or otherwise altered forms of names rather than the actual name throughout life.

It's my name and I hate it. I find it clunky and I don't think the syllables flow well when said out loud

Maria is nice.

I am sorry you don't like your name, it's a lovely name! It's a very subjective thing I suppose.

But I do think that Maria is the very opposite of 'clunky' - clunky to me would be names like Henrietta and, I don't know, Hepzibah or something. Something long and a bit harsh with lots of different consonants. Whereas Maria has a lovely melifluous sound and a lot of other people think so too. But if you don't like it, you don't like it.

A bit dated

It's a classic that's not overused and works well in many languages. I know a teenage Maria who goes by MiMi and it really suits her.

Lovely name and very underused.

I like Mary and Marina too.

I love it. Very underused in the UK, if that’s where you are, but known everywhere.

I would say timeless rather than dated. I like it.

It's nice. You could go anywhere in the world or time travel to any period in history and it wouldn't be long before you met a Maria.
