Hi all

We are expecting our first baby and just looking for some opinions on my list, we don’t know what we are having yet.

Girls

Elodie
Margot
Phoebe

Boys

Austin
Lawson
Saul

Middle name will be Jane for a girl & David for a boy, both family names.

I love both Elodie and Phoebe. I'm one who just sees Maggot when I read Margot, but it's a very popular name so I don't think that's the norm!

I love Saul, and Austin isn't my taste but I don't hate. Lawson is a surname and I think surnames as first names almost always come across pretty trashy.

Goandygo · 21/05/2025 15:06

Phoebe Jane
Saul David

Goandygo · 21/05/2025 15:06

I really like Seth, too.

Dinoswearunderpants · 21/05/2025 15:07

Not keen on any of them sorry. Very American or old fashioned.

DramaAlpaca · 21/05/2025 15:08

I'm not keen on Margot and I really don't like Saul, but the others are very nice. I like the middle names too.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 21/05/2025 16:15

Elodie- - looks pretty written down but meh. Likely to be Ellie.
Margot - trendy. Can't say I'm keen.
Phoebe - like.

Austin - it's OK
Lawson - too surnamey
Saul - like

I prefer the middle names to the first names.

BarnacleBeasley · 21/05/2025 16:18

I find Saul David a bit jarring because of the Bible story.

RobinStrike · 21/05/2025 16:19

I think the middle names are more attractive and these days are probably more unusual

Moreteaandchocolate · 21/05/2025 16:21

Girls
All are lovely. Phoebe has the most stable popularity over recent years, whereas Elodie and Margot have had recent spikes in popularity, meaning they are more likely to date (if that matters to you). I’d pick Phoebe.

Boys
Austin is my favourite and I like the nn Ozzy too. Saul and Lawson are ok but not for me.

bluedelphinium · 21/05/2025 16:32

Really dislike Lawson and Austin. Saul isn't to my taste but ok, best of a bad bunch. How do you feel about the story?

Any others? Lawson is by far the worst.

Margot is ok but much I prefer Margaret. Elodie, ok on paper but meh out loud. Phoebe, bit uninspired through longitudinal overuse.

Sorry.

bluedelphinium · 21/05/2025 16:33

To be clear, Lawson is fine as a surname. Not being rude in case Nigella is reading! I just don't think all surnames work as random first names.

Mumofgirls2017 · 21/05/2025 17:04

Elodie- pretty, I know so many though!
margot- ok but trendy and never really got my head round it
phoebe- I’m not a fan but perfectly fine name if popular

austin- quite like and not too popular atm
lawson- I find the ‘law’ bit a bit too much for me. Sounds like a lawyer.
saul- not a fan due to not the best biblical associations but I have come across a little Saul!

MoreChocPls · 21/05/2025 17:05

Girls names are nice. The boys names are all awful.

CurlewKate · 21/05/2025 17:06

Phoebe and Saul.
I’m not especially fond of Saul, but I think it’s the best of the 3!

Pemba · 21/05/2025 17:07

Saul and Phoebe! Elodie is pretty too, but Phoebe is more classic I feel. Have you considered Eloise? (I love that name!).

Don't like surnames as first names in general, and Lawson seems particularly random. My mind immediately goes to Nigella Lawson and her dad Nigel, a prominent member of Mrs Thatcher's cabinet back in the day.

I LOVE Saul!. Such a gorgeous name. Phoebe and Elodie are my favourites of your girls names. I quite like Austin as well. Not a fan of Margot or Lawson, and Margot is getting very popular.

Firsttimebabymummy · 21/05/2025 19:30

I really like Pheobe. Not keen on the others, sorry!

DuchessOfNarcissex · 21/05/2025 19:36

It gets misspelt.

CuriousA · 21/05/2025 19:50

I hadn't thought about the connotations of Saul with David.. I like Sol too but would probably use Solomon , although is that too Stacey Solomon 😩

would welcome other suggestions 😊 our surname is very common (think Jones type name) so I don’t want anything overly popular but still want something recognisable and easy for people to spell etc.

Mauvehoodie · 21/05/2025 19:58

My favourites are Elodie and Austin, both of those have been on my baby name lists at some point (DP very traditional so vetoed both!).

real13 · 21/05/2025 19:59

Margot and Austin are my faves

Mauvehoodie · 21/05/2025 20:00

Marcus
Tobin
Caleb

Serena
Flora
Louisa
Juliet

Are some others from my list that might work for you.

bluedelphinium · 21/05/2025 20:27

I like Solomon! Seth? Elias, Jacob. Julius, Vincent, Lawrence/ Laurence is nicer than Lawson

Girls I really love mid century names at the minute, not sure if these are to your taste

PorgyandBess · 21/05/2025 20:28

Every other baby is Elodie or Margot.

Phoebe is nice and not common. Saul also.
