Sorry for all the posts from me in the last few weeks, I’m just seeing what people think.

We really like Iris, but also Sophia - Sophia Iris is a potential, but my DH would love Iris as a first name.

It’s very popular but not quite as insanely popular as Sophia, it’s lovely so I’d go for it… unless you like a more unusual alternative for either

Lois

Saskia

Iris. Sophia (and Sofia) are wildly popular.

Iris may well get there in the future but it isn’t yet in the top 50 names.

WtafIsThat · 09/05/2025 21:06

I don’t think Iris is unusual at all. I also don’t like it, it’s quite harsh sounding.

Iris is a very sweet name!

I think it would sound beautiful with a three or four syllable middle name with a slightly melodic sound to it with a vowel as a first letter and i in there somewhere so it flows after the s at the end of Iris… and it would look so nice when written.

Eg:

Iris Evangeline
Iris Ophelia
Iris Angelica

Sophia is a pretty name too but I don’t think the flow of Iris Sophia would work too well because of the s and S.

Spidey66 · 09/05/2025 22:51

Both are beautiful, and I would imagine age well. I can imagine a baby, an adult and a pensioner with both names, I could also imagine a professional with either name.

Iris is great but I don't think it goes in either direction with Sophia - either too many vowels or too many Ss next to each other.

Agreed, more so on the s’s. The flow isn’t there even though they are both good names independently.

Devilmentpleassure · 10/05/2025 00:22

I associate Iris with someone who is 90. I don’t like it at all.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 13/05/2025 10:18

My youngest DD is Iris and I adore her name. Her middle name is Matilda.

mellowout · 13/05/2025 10:22

I love the name Iris. I have a relative called Iris and always loved the name.

IsItADream · 13/05/2025 11:15

I had a Great Aunt Iris. I always thought it was a beautiful name. Unfortunately I need a name the can be pronounced in German as well and I hate the German pronunciation! Sophia seems quite popular now and I don't love the sound of it.

Middle names:
Iris Bethany
Iris Olivia
Iris Emilia

I wouldn't use an S middle name. I don't think it flows right with the S at the end of Iris.

Firebird83 · 13/05/2025 12:44

It’s beautiful. Lots of symbolism as well with the rainbow meaning and the flower. I would have consider it if I didn’t already have one in the family.

SemperIdem · 13/05/2025 21:36

@IsItADream how is the name pronounced in Germany?

ThePoliteLion · 13/05/2025 21:47

Iris is a beautiful name
Go for it
x

WonderingWanda · 13/05/2025 21:55

I love Iris. I've only ever taught one Iris but have taught hundreds of Sophia / Sofia's.

Iris Rose
Iris Grace
Iris Olivia
Iris Elizabeth

I would have Iris Rose personally but my dh thinks flower names are silly and two flower names are beyond silly.

Pleaseshutthefuckup · 13/05/2025 21:58

Yes to Iris. Beautiful and not too common.

hollyhocksinthegarden · 13/05/2025 22:13

I’m not keen on Iris… makes me think of eye anatomy rather than the flowers

Whoarethoseguys · 13/05/2025 22:15

I like Iris I prefer it to Sophia .

Dexterslab · 14/05/2025 06:59

My daughter is Iris Amelia, I still love her name and get lots of positive comments on it. Shes 7 and I only know two other Iris’, one is 11 and one is 1. We named her after our first dance song, Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls!

SemperIdem · 13/05/2025 21:36

@IsItADream how is the name pronounced in Germany?

The letter I in German is pronounced like an E in English, so it's Ee-riss.

wehavea2319 · 14/05/2025 08:10

I just think of eyeballs with Iris

Calliopespa · 14/05/2025 09:10

AlphabettiTouretti · 09/05/2025 15:49

Both are lovely. Iris is more unusual and striking.

Agree. Both lovely.

I think they go together perfectly well but Iris Sophia flows better than Sophia Iris.

CountryShepherd · 14/05/2025 21:54

I think Iris is lovely, it was my second choice after Henrietta.

IrisaNZ · 29/05/2025 09:47

I was meant to be Iris but a family friend told my mum to put an A on the end and I’m so happy that happened, it’s not that bad of a name I just think Irisa is better.

Emanwenym · 29/05/2025 10:17

@SemperIdem , a bit like Ee-riss.
@IrisaNZ , how do you say Irisa. - Eye-RISS-a, Iris-a, Ireesa, ...?

KayEmAy · 30/05/2025 18:58

I recognize it as a classic, it just isn't my favorite.
