We love the name 'ALE-A' I'm not sure how best to spell it as Google suggests Ela but partner feels it's too much like Ella. We like Aela but this seems to spell 'A-LA'. Suggestions needed.

So you want it to rhyme with paler / jailer / sailor?

If so, Ayla is your best bet

Needmorelego · 05/05/2025 20:47

@Annoy2312 I'm not sure how I would spell it to be honest.
I know people are suggesting Ayla but if I saw that I would say it as "Eye-la".
Sorry 🙁

LadyButtonofButtonHouse · 05/05/2025 20:47

Ailah?

BellissimoGecko · 05/05/2025 20:49

If it’s pronounced Ayla then call the baby Ayla. Not Alea, which people won’t know how to pronounce. Plus, Ayla looks nicer than Alea.

Why??

Isla - eye-la

Ayla -ay-la

Just throwing it out there but have you considered Ailsa (recognised name - especially in Scotland)?

Tulipsontoast · 05/05/2025 20:53

I know an Ayla pronounced Ale ah

And then lies the problem.
Nobody will know how to pronounce it.

Don't do this to your daughter.

Needmorelego · 05/05/2025 20:55

@BellissimoGecko I have just always assumed that was how Ayla was pronounced.
I have only ever seen it written - I've never actually heard it out loud.
If it generally is pronounced Ay-la then I will use that from now on 🙂
I'm not getting "Ale-la" from it though?🤔

Neurotoxic · 05/05/2025 20:56

It's Ayla. If Ayla was pronounced Eye-la it would be Isla.
But I think Aela works too!

I know two girls called Ayla and both pronounce it Eye-La.

They are of mixed Turkish heritage (one has a Turkish mum, the other a Turkish Dad). I don't know if that makes a difference to the pronunciation.

I know one... Pronunciation AIL-UH

TURNYOURCAPSLOCKOFF · 05/05/2025 20:57

ArminTamzerian · 05/05/2025 20:42

That's not even close

Agreed...that ar-lee-uh!

Ayla - Ayla (as in say) La

Needmorelego · 05/05/2025 21:28

@BellissimoGecko but "say" isn't the same pronunciation as "ale".
So I wouldn't say Ayla is the right spelling for what she wants.

AdaColeman · 05/05/2025 21:39

Some ideas.....
Aiy-lah
or
Aayler......like Taylor without the T
or
Aeylaah

PeachPumpkin · 05/05/2025 22:08

Ayula

Newmum110 · 05/05/2025 22:13

Eala is the Irish word for Swan, the name is becoming more popular here in Ireland in recent years. If that is what your pronunciation is.

Bigfatsunandclouds · 05/05/2025 22:20

Aila

Marieme · 05/05/2025 22:30

Aila, my DD has a friend named Aila and her parents pronounce it ‘Ale-ah’

RaraRachael · 05/05/2025 22:40

We had a couple of Ailas at school pronounced Ale-ah

It's Ayla. If Ayla was pronounced Eye-la it would be Isla.

Not necessarily - Ay can be Eye, as in “Aye aye captain”

In Hebrew Ayla is Ail-la; in Turkish Ayla is Eye-la.

I know one pronounced the way you want and they spell it Ayla.

Aila

user2848502016 · 06/05/2025 10:32

Eyla
Ayla is usually pronounced like Isla and I think some people would say Aila like that too
