Twin girls name advice

Brydiegrace · 04/05/2025 16:33

We already have a 2 year old Ottilie Grace and are expecting twin girls at the end of the year, I don’t want matchy names or them to have the same initials. We quite like old fashioned names, we are leaning towards Mabel for one of them but no ideas for the other and would like Rose to be one of their middle names! Please could we have some suggestions thank you!

No real advice as I never really got to indulge in girls names. But I do have twin boys and I would advise having name which sound very different… it’s easier for the children to realise who is who when their names sound different so avoid having names which sound too similar! Even more so if they are identical, as it helps with them having their own identity when they get to early years education if the other children are able to grasp their names easily.

Is Rose not an option as a first name?

Mabel and Rose sound lovely together.

Otherwise

Mabel and Beatrice
Mabel and Clara
Mabel and Enid
Mabel and Olive
Mabel and Pearl

Crunchymum · 04/05/2025 16:52

I also like Martha as an alternative to Mabel if you aren't sure? They have a similar vibe (but you could only use one or the other)

Mabel and Rose (with older sister Ottilie) sound lovely for twin girls as they’re complimentary but don’t sound the same.

Mabel Violet and Emily Rose (so they both have a “flower” as a middle name)?

Love Mabel!

Mabel and

Florence
Clara
Heidi
Polly
Beatrice
Eliza
Alice
Ada
Violet
Harriet
Grace
Nancy
Elsie
Georgia

Speaking from experience it’s nice to use shorter names for twins because they’re often known as x and y - so it’s a lot of syllables if they have longer names!!

Congratulations - exciting times!

Moreteaandchocolate · 04/05/2025 17:14

Just saw the suggestion of Mabel and Rose - I love this too!

Goandygo · 04/05/2025 17:16

Martha Rose and Iris Jane
( not keen on Mabel ! )

bluesatin · 04/05/2025 17:22

I had 3 generations of aunts called Lavinia Rose. Lavinia is old fashioned and uncommon...

PurpleChrayn · 04/05/2025 17:32

Rose and Martha?

Mabel is a domestic servant name.

wellingtonsandwaffles · 04/05/2025 17:34

Mabel is beautiful
Maeve is also good but not together with Mabel

other names of a similar vibe:

Lydia
Eliza
Jemima (Jem)
Heidi

Rose or Rosa or Rosaline or Roseanne all lovely also if you promote from a middle name

UtterlyOtterly · 04/05/2025 17:44

You may want to consider having the same number of letters in each name. I know a set of twins who had 4 and 6 letter names and the one with 4 sometimes felt hard done by.

For example, a friend bought them wooden jigsaws of their names but one was much longer than the other.

Perhaps not the only consideration but worth bearing in mind.

Rose and Martha?

Mabel is a domestic servant name.

Martha is literally THE domestic servant name. It’s a biblical name for a character primarily associated with household chores (Martha and Mary of Bethany).

In further literature The Secret Garden, The Handmaids Tale, all reference this.

MrsMontgomerySmythe · 04/05/2025 17:57

Mabel Rose and Loveday Elisabeth

Yeah, you should keep this in mind... when you are raising them, to educated them not to feel slighted by minor things.

SnowdaySewday · 04/05/2025 19:30

Give them different initials and give twin 2 the first alphabetically so they come first in some situations, such as on school registers, and so it’s not always their name prefixed by “Sister's name and…”.

Twin 1 - Rose (or Rosie) Faith
Twin 2 - Mabel Hope
to keep middle names in same style as your eldest.

Namexchangex · 04/05/2025 19:31

I much prefer Rose as a first name vs middle name, it's much more unexpected.
A version of rose would be nice too
Mabel and Rosa/Rosalie - although Rose is my favourite
