Soon to be dad here! I’m looking for suggestions on cute/pretty middle names names for my little girl.
My wife and I plan to have her first name as Ira (Eye-rah).
Ideas for middle names I have right now are LaFrance, Lottie, LaLune, and Violet, Citrus, or Maple. You can give me your opinion on those or other ideas!

OP posts:

My daughters middle name is Aurora.
Our other second name options was Poppy, Luna, Fern and Beatrix

dontcomeatme · 03/05/2025 19:14

I love Ira Maple

PinkFitzpatrick · 03/05/2025 19:15

I love Ira Violet. The rest I’m not very keen on at all, especially the “la” ones. Unless you’re French it comes across as a bit chavvy 🙈

redgingerbread · 03/05/2025 19:23

Ira is a boy’s name, isn’t it? In any case it makes me think of the IRA so I’m not keen. What about Ida or Isla instead?

raysan · 03/05/2025 19:24

How about middle name for someone you admire. Sports - Jessica, Venus, Serena, Mary? Computing - Ada. Activism - Emma, Malala, Greta

Emanwenym · 03/05/2025 19:28

Ira (Eye-rah). - it's a boy's name.
LaFrance - no, Francine?
Lottie - yes, Lotta?
LaLune - no, Luna?
Violet - yes
Citrus - no, Clementine?
Maple - not sure. Mabel?

mathanxiety · 03/05/2025 19:29

Ira Violet or Ira Maple would be nice. Not keen on the others at all.

Ira is usually a male name, though.

PinkFitzpatrick · 03/05/2025 19:30

I had no idea Ira was a “boys” name. It’s so pretty! I still say go for it. It’s gender neutral if you say so :D it’s not like you’re calling her Dave 😂

Moreteaandchocolate · 03/05/2025 19:31

Ira Lottie and Ira Violet are lovely.
How about

Ira Willow
Ira Daisy
Ira Jade
Ira Maisie
Ira Molly
Ira Lorelei
Ira Penny
Ira Phoebe
Ira Florence
Ira Mabel
Ira Hallie
Ira Darcey
Ira Nellie
Ira Tilly
Ira Carys

Mumofgirls2017 · 03/05/2025 21:54

ira eloise
ira juliet

ChocolateCinderToffee · 03/05/2025 22:21

Ira is a man’s name. What about Eia, after the Cornish Saint? Or Isa?

Pemba · 03/05/2025 22:30

Ira is a male name as far as I know (Jewish).

Unless there's co-incidentally also a female name of a different origin?

Ferretedaway · 03/05/2025 22:31

The only Ira’s I know are male. I didn’t realise it was a girls name too. I like Violet but none of your others so far. Anything with ‘La’ before it sounds try-hard Z lister. How about -
Ira Kate
Ira May
Ira Rose
Ira Faye
Ira Charlotte
Ira Noa

It actually sounds much worse when you're french, believe me 😂

OP, I would strongly advise against any "La" name.

Francine or Françoise are fine
Lottie is a diminutive, Charlotte is okay, I like Charline though.
Luna is okay but extremely common these days. How about Selene, since that means moon in Greek.
Violet is okay I suppose but viol means rape in French and I can't get past that
Citrus is a no from me, it's not commonly used as a name and it just reminds me of washing products (every toilet cleanser is advertised as smelling of citrus !)
Maple is less problematic than Citrus but still not a name.

You seem keen on nature names so how about Wren, Robin, Willow, Summer, Estelle ?

From your list I prefer..
Ira Maple
Ira LaFrance
Do you like..

Ira Lilou
Ida Pomeline

Or Irene?

I agree with the IRA observation.

Could you spell it Eyra?

Calliopespa · 04/05/2025 10:15

I d then go for Eyra Jane as it has nice Jane Eyre vibes!

Calliopespa · 04/05/2025 10:16

It also looks like it comes from Ire which isn’t a nice meaning.

But I agree the sound is pretty. I’d go for Eyra.

Cabbagefamily · 04/05/2025 10:25

Ira is a very male name of Jewish origin. It doesn’t work for a girl. You could have Irena or Irina? Aria? Irene? Isla?

Moreteaandchocolate · 04/05/2025 10:35

I know a few Welsh Eira’s said eye-ra (I know it’s pronounced differently in different parts of Wales). That might be an alternative spelling if you prefer?

Emanwenym · 04/05/2025 10:51

There's a Swedish/Finnish/Norwegian name Eira, which actually isn't pronounced Eye-ra.
(The Welsh one is just the Welsh word for Snow, which isn't pronounced Eye-ra.)

Calliopespa · 04/05/2025 10:57

Whichever way you do it op - and there’s been a few suggestions - I think I’d get an “E” in the front of her name for all the reasons tabled.

Emanwenym · 04/05/2025 11:08

Eira seems like a good compromise.
I know a female Ira , short for Irina( Irr-eena) but she says it as Ee-ra.

mathanxiety · 04/05/2025 20:35

I take back my liking for Ira Violet.
I can hear the word "revile" in there.
