Please pick the best name from each list and/or give me your opinion on these names. Suggestions are also welcome. Gender is unknown. I have placed relevant information regarding each name in parentheses. Thank you!

Girl:
Andrea (I only like the ann-dree-ah pronunciation.)
Damaris (pronounced dah-mair-is)
Emilia (I'm concerned that this name would be misheard and/or misspelled as Amelia.)
Emmeline (I only like the em-eh-line pronunciation.)
Ivory
Kalliope (pronounced kah-lie-ah-pee)
Karla
Karlene
Kiara (pronounced kee-are-ah)
Mary-Kate
Ursa

Girls -
My favourite is Karla (but prefer the Carla spelling) - gorgeous name. I also like Kiara a lot. Emilia is lovely if you don’t mind the mixing up with Amelia (it would bother me so I wouldn’t choose it myself). Emmeline is quite nice. I’m not so keen on your other names. (Andrea - dated; Damaris - Dam for short?!; Ivory - elephant tusks; Kalliope - frilly; Karlene - cheap 80’s vibes; Mary -Kate - nice without the hyphen; Ursa - urs for short - sounds like arse!)

Boys -

I love Charles (nn Charlie) and Lewis. I don’t dislike any of your boys names though.

LilyJosephine · 03/05/2025 01:43

If you like Charles for a boy and Emmeline for a girl, then how about Caroline for a girl? It’s an elegant, underused classic and you shouldn’t have any pronunciation problems with it in the UK (where as Emmeline often has the “leen” pronunciation here. Andrea could go either way and I’ve only heard Damaris as “Dah-mar-is”).

Emilia is also lovely- but yes, she’d have to put up with people occasionally mistaking it for Amelia (as in most accents it sounds the same). Ophelia has similar sounds but may be too trendy for you. Cordelia?

For boys I like Charles (though you couldn’t really have that with Caroline) and Lewis.

SilverButton · 03/05/2025 01:52

My favourites are Andrea, Emmeline, Carla, Ciara, Charles and Kieran.

dontcomeatme · 03/05/2025 01:56

Kiara and Nico

SpicyMoth · 03/05/2025 02:02

I like Kiara, reminds me of Lion King 2

And I like Kane, it could be seen as religious though so its up to you if you mind that or not - but I kind of like it because you don't see it that often despite its religious ties - but then it could also be "Cain" as in to raise cain, cause trouble, be boisterous etc - which is another reason I love it personally.
Cain's always been a fave name of mine but I doubt my DH would ever allow it!

WhimsyWhim · 02/05/2025 21:17

Thank you for the advice! I agree that they're too similar for siblings.

It would be pronounced mal-ah-kai.

Nico
Charles/Charlie
Lewis

Mary-Kate
Karla

urbanbuddha · 03/05/2025 02:09

Sorry @WhimsyWhim
I have no idea why my post quotes you. It wasn't meant to!

uncomfortablydumb60 · 03/05/2025 05:08

Emmeline and Lewis

Maxorias · 03/05/2025 05:32

I like Kiara and Ivory. What about Keira ?

Also like Kieran, Malachi, Saul, Lewis and Nico (if short for Nicolas)

Yerto · 03/05/2025 07:56

I only really like Emilia from your girls names.

Boys names I like Nico and Saul. Charles and Lewis are fine names too. Kane is quite a rough name where I am, Kieran I like but would see on an older guy.

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 03/05/2025 08:05

Love Emmeline and Malachai.

Crunchymum · 03/05/2025 08:14

My advice is go for a name that you don't need to explain how to pronounce (makes life much easier and you have a few on your list!)

Andrea- a bit dated but not quite vintage in my opinion!
Damaris- sounds like a type of rash cream (sorry!)
Emilia (I'm concerned that this name would be misheard and/or misspelled as Amelia.)- niece is Emilia (Emmy for short) and has rarely had this issue
Emmeline (I only like the em-eh-line pronunciation.)- beautiful
Ivory- prefer Ivy but I know is popular
Kalliope (pronounced kah-lie-ah-pee)- prefer the C spelling but us beautiful
Karla- prefer with a C
Karlene- not for me but nothing wrong with it though again I would use a C
Kiara (pronounced kee-are-ah)- where I am (uk) she would be called Keer a
Mary-Kate- not a fan or double barrels personally
Ursa- reminds me of the character Ursula, I think there are a lot nicer names on your list
Boy:
Charles- love
Kane- love
Kieran- love
Lewis- not for me but nothing
Malachi- not for me
Moses-not for me
Nico- I would have a longer name like Nicholas then have nico as a nn
Saul- not for me

Firsttimebabymummy · 03/05/2025 10:29

Girl:
Andrea - really like this. Like Andy as a nn too.

Emilia - 2nd choice. I work in a nursey and the Emilias and Amelias don't get mixed up.

Boy:
Charles - like.
Lewis - really like

Don't like any of the others, sorry.

ToadRage · 03/05/2025 10:59

Sorry, I don't like most of your girls name and as far as I am concerned Amelia is the correct spelling (family name and my middle name). I like Lewis and Keiran. Kane i would spell Cain like in the bible. You wouldn't like Malachi if you've seen Children of the Corn.

BaldMouse · 03/05/2025 14:08

@ToadRage , Amelia and Emilia are both correct. They're different names. You are saying something like that Emily is a misspelling of Amelia.

WhimsyWhim · 03/05/2025 15:50

LilyJosephine · 03/05/2025 01:43

Caroline and Ophelia are both nice! I had Caroline on my original list, but it was vetoed.

I will say that I do think the "leen" pronunciation of Emmeline is pretty, but I'm concerned that it would be mistaken for Emily when said. It sounds irrational because the two names are so similar, but I really dislike Emily. Unfortunately, I've met multiple Emilys that were quite rude and unpleasant to be around, so it's difficult for me to look past that association.

Mandarinaduck · 03/05/2025 18:52

Damaris is a lovely name but the one I know is pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable, so something like 'DAMMeriss'.

I also like Kiara and Kalliope.

Andrea is quite nice. What about Anthea or Alethea?

I think I like Moses best from your boy choices. What about Micah or Seth?

PinkFitzpatrick · 03/05/2025 19:05

I prefer Amelia to Emilia, it gives ~trying to be different~
I like Emmeline but prefer the pronunciation Em-eh-lean - but it’s a pretty name either way!
Ivory is pretty!
Kalliope is awful it sounds like an exotic fruit, sorry 😭
Kiara just makes me think of the lion from the lion king sequel
Mary-Kate is atrocious because it’s too much of a celebrity name
Ursa is an evil villain name

Charles is an old man name and very boring
Kane is a chav/road man name
Kieran is fine, a little boring and maybe kinda outdated
Lewis again a little outdated maybe but I still like it
Malachi is awful
Moses is pretentious
Nico makes him sound like a GTA character/gangster
Better Call Saul.

Can you tell I’m incredibly fussy with boys names? 😅

Just my honest opinion on them, and I know for sure you’d hate my favourite boys names so we definitely just need to agree to disagree :D
