We have finally come to a name for daughter number 2 that we both think we like. What’s the general feeling about Penelope Iris? Iris is after my mum so that’s set but wondering about Penelope. She would probs go by Penny or Pen or Nell or something day to day. Partner has always loved Persephone and I just can’t get on board with it but Penelope is definitely growing on us. Awful or not?

Beautiful name! Know 2 children under 6 with the name, one goes by penny and the other is Nelly!

persephone is anemic for aquired taste but the nicknames could be penny, seph

I know a 4 year old Penelope who predominantly goes by Nell. It really suits her.

Penelope Iris is lovely.

I quite like it but really dislike Penny so I wouldn’t risk it

Clearinguptheclutter · 30/04/2025 20:01

It was my top choice, nn Nel.
(I had boys!)

Ahh I have a Penny Iris!! We decided against Penelope as we have a long surname but I do love it

The combination of names is beautiful. Persephone is awful. She will have to spell it her whole life. I like formal names. But since the popularity of Penelope is rising, there will probably be a lot of Pennys in school. I would introduce her as Penelope, see if it sticks. At home, call her Nelly or Nelli.

Penelope was top of my list for my second born - who was a boy.

You could always stick a v in and go with Penvelope if you want to be more yooneek.

My cousin has just had a baby and called her Penelope

PurpleChrayn · 01/05/2025 18:22

It’s the local chav name where I’m from. Due to Kourtney Kardashian using it, no doubt.

I love both Penelope and Iris and considered both for DD2.
I don't like Persephone at all though.

Same, except our nickname would have been Penny.

My DD is 19, of the kids we've come across in last nearly 20 years there have been two Pennys and one Iris. Both lovely names.

PumpkinScarf · 01/05/2025 19:27

Both lovely names. We have a Penelope and she is mostly Penelope, occasionally Penny. Our Penelope also has a floral middle name.

wehavea2319 · 02/05/2025 08:46

It’s very popular but I like it (and can see why it’s so popular!). I absolutely love Nell or Nellie as nicknames too.

I really dislike Persephone.

I’m genuinely intrigued why Persephone is mentioned and suggested so much on mumsnet? I wasn’t even aware of the name prior to seeing it on here. Google tells me it’s not even in the top 500 for uk girls so very unusual.

Redaska · 02/05/2025 09:01

I'm pleased (and surprised) to see so many people like the name.

It's my name and I hate it! I dislike both the long and shortened forms and even considered changing my name when I was in my 20s.

@wehavea2319 , it could be the same one or two posting their love for a name. There are a few that post about names that are not popular or are terribly dated.
Persephone is increasing in popularity, but it is still not being used much.
Babies called Persephone in England & Wales since 1996

Sometimes there seems to be a swathe of threads about one name, and it's the one poster starting them.
