Hiya everyone,
So I am due a baby girl in a few weeks time and we are super stuck on names. We already have a little boy called Joseph and so would like to avoid names beginning with J.
Both me and DH prefer classic names and have the following shortlist but have some doubts surrounding them:
Charlotte - I don’t like the shortenings and it’s almost guaranteed to be shortened, also maybe too popular??
Matilda - quite popular and not sure if it would suit an adult?
Eloise - growing popularity?
Middle name will be Elizabeth. Please can you give me your opinions on the above names and I would love to hear your suggestions.
Thank you so much!

Charlotte is a Mumsnet favourite but I don't like the sound (doesn't really matter what I like though, it's certainly an acceptable name if you love it!). I like Lottie though.

Matilda is fine for an adult. Loads of older historical and literary Matildas. It's another name where I prefer the nickname though - Mattie is great.

Other suggestions:
Alexandra
Emma
Anna
Francesca
Isabella
Alice
Rosalind
Philippa
Lydia
Harriet
Eleanor
Cassandra
Marianne
Julia
Miriam
Esther
Naomi
Verity
Felicity
Sophie

Zoe?

My ds is Thomas Joseph.

Girls names had were

Charlotte Louise
Matilda Grace
Willow Elizabeth
Evelyn Anne
Frances Elizabeth
Sophia Louise/ Elizabeth

Yes I did give it loads of thought but name had to work in 2 languages and o do like classic timeless names.

DS was going to be

Thomas Joseph
Joseph Matthew
George Matthew
Charlie Thomas
Sebastian George
Issac George

So my vote on your names is

Charlotte Elizabeth

Mary … (sorry, I’ll get my coat) 🤣

If my son had been a girl he would have been called Maria. He was a miracle baby as we'd been told we wouldn't be able to have a baby as I'd been so seriously injured in a car accident. I'm RC & prayed if God gave me a baby they would be called Maria after the BVM (Blessed Virgin Mary) or Joseph after Our Lord's foster father. Guess what - at age of 7 my Joseph announced that he would only answer to the name of Joe & ignored anyone calling him by 'Joseph'. Kids eh? 😂

Joseph and Alice
Joseph and Martha

uncomfortablydumb60 · 27/04/2025 14:52

Meant to add Lucy but I’ve seen you like that

Happyspendingthedayinthegarden · 27/04/2025 15:52

I love the name Martha & Eve. Have a DIL called Lucy also love that name.

RoundSquareWithTriangles · 27/04/2025 16:39

I see Sarah has been suggested already. I think it's a beautiful name.

AusBoundDD · 27/04/2025 16:41

I know an Anna & Joseph pair of siblings! They go really nicely together in my opinion. Really like Eloise from your options too

Ygfrhj · 27/04/2025 16:43

I know some little siblings Joseph and Anna

Goandygo · 27/04/2025 16:50

We have a Joseph and Olivia - they're in their 30s.
I like Matilda and Charlotte.

Roaminginthegloaming · 27/04/2025 16:52

My mother’s name is:

Rosemary Elizabeth (although she’s usually called Rose)

I also like Jessica Elizabeth

PerkyPearlHedgehog · 27/04/2025 16:59

Some really lovely suggestions, thank you all so much.
We have decided to add Lucy to the shortlist. Really like Anna but worry it sounds the like hannah but without the H’s?
Also love Rosalind but Rosie is very popular around here and I worry it will be shortened.
Unfortunately can’t use Emily or Sarah as they are very close family members names.
Actually really like Frances as well but I think DH finds it too masculine.
Thank you again x

Sarah would have been nice but I see that's out. How about:

Ruth Elizabeth
Chloe Elizabeth
Rachel Elizabeth

I also think Anna is a perfectly recognisable name (and is lovely with both your middle name choice and DS's name)

EnterNowhere · 27/04/2025 17:14

Charlotte is nice, I only know 2 little Charlotte's. I would say Matilda is more popular. I love Eloise but not sure if it goes with Elizabeth necessarily.

Joseph is a lovely classic name.

How about Abigail, Alexandra, Amelia, Beatrice, Annabel, Florence, Georgia, Lydia, Pippa, Thea

HeyCooper · 27/04/2025 17:16

Georgia

Mumofgirls2017 · 27/04/2025 17:44
