I’m due in 4 weeks with DD. DH is Welsh and I am Cornish, we’re trying to decide between Merryn and Gwen. What’s the Mumsnet verdict?

Gwendolyn nn Gwen
If not then Merryn
Both are good

shoopshoopdedoo · 25/04/2025 15:55

Oooh I love both! Gwen just edges it for me but it’s a tough call.

Okay which do we think goes better with the middle name Willow?

Merryn is nicer and goes better with Willow.

Also, gwenn has an unfortunate meaning in Cornish…

Merryn Willow is gorgeous and would be my preference, but they are both lovely names!

Congratulations on your little one!

Shouldn't it be Gwendoline or something, not just Gwen? Sounds a bit abrupt as a full name.

If it is just Gwen, then I'd rather go with Merryn.

butterdish93 · 25/04/2025 17:35

I voted Gwen. I’d LOVE to meet a little Gwenny at playgroup. But merryn is very cute too

Moreteaandchocolate · 25/04/2025 17:41

Merryn Willow sounds best - lovely name 😊

WWomble · 25/04/2025 18:35

(Realising the irony with my username)

I’m not keen on the repeating ‘w’ sound in Gwen Willow. I preferred Merryn anyway but much prefer Merryn with Willow.

BoleynMemories13 · 25/04/2025 19:33

Merryn Willow goes well. Gwen Willow is much too w heavy.

TheScottishPlay · 25/04/2025 20:11

Merryn is lovely.
Not Gwen.

BuntyBeaufort · 25/04/2025 23:03

Merryn is so sweet, and suits both a small child (nn Merry possibly?) but also a woman with a good life and a purpose.

BumbleBeegu · 25/04/2025 23:10

Both lovely…genuinely struggled to vote, but went with Merryn in the end.

wellingtonsandwaffles · 25/04/2025 23:22

merryn by miles!

Gosh, you learn something new every day!

Merryn is just lovely. Gwen just reminds me of Gwendoline Mary Lacey.
Merryn Willow goes really nicely as well.

Ferretedaway · 26/04/2025 08:14

Merryn is lovely

I'm Scandinavian and I thought Merryn was a boy's name. And it reminds me of Lord of the Rings.

Sorry, off topic, but I think you may be mixing up two different hobbits, Merry (full name Meriadoc) and Pippin?

mangoguava · 26/04/2025 20:31

Think we’re going for Merryn! ❤

Merryn ❤️

Phoebepeeby · 26/04/2025 20:39

I love Merryn (I’m also Cornish). Gwen is lovely but Merryn just beats it.

Baninarama · 26/04/2025 21:02

My dd has a friend called Merryn - love it.
