I like:

Nicole - aka Coco for a girl

or

Reuben for a boy

any reason I should avoid theese? My DH is not conivinced on Reuben. So told him the Mumsnet ladies would give us an honest opinion!

Like Nicole and Reuben.. Coco is a bit odd though!

BoysAreLikeDogs · 16/05/2008 17:15

Both are fine.

jk1 · 16/05/2008 17:19

Hehe Coco def slightly mad but I like to have cute shortenings - love Nicole for a 30 year old lawyer but not a teeny babe! And hate Nicky or Nic!

I know a repellent Reuben, so that biases me against it rather - but other than him I like it. It means red iirc- which may or may not impact if you have red hair in the family?
Can't say I'm personally keen on Coco, but prefer it to Nicky/Niki/Nicki permutations

Anna8888 · 16/05/2008 17:20

Reuben is lovely. There is a little girl in my daughter's year at school called Livia (also lovely) whose older brother is Reuben.

Nicole is boring.

Not coco! That's a cat's name. Or even a clown's.
Don't like Nicole either.
Love Reuben.

Nancy66 · 16/05/2008 17:23

Don't like Nicole - a bit page 3 girl.
Coco - sounds like a porn star or a breakfast cereal.

Reuben is great though.

Nancy66 · 16/05/2008 17:24

If you like Coco - what about Kiki...that's quite cute (an abbreviation of Katherine)

belgo · 16/05/2008 17:25

Nicole and Reuben are fine (unless you can't say your 'r's). Coco is a bit too cute, but I like it.

Spidermama · 16/05/2008 17:26

I love them all particularly Coco. It's not as whacky as all that. Some of you women are so straight it makes me larf. There are two Coco's in my ds's year alone.

Lovely names - I was just watching TOPT2 and an odd 70s band were singing a song about a Coco and I was thinking what a lovely name it is.
Surely Chanel outweighs the clown connatation? But I named my dd after a showgirl/transvestite so I don't hold much with connotations!
Reuben is fab - are there biblical meanings with that name?

RainyWednesday · 16/05/2008 17:28

Quite like them both.

Not sure about Coco - think it might be borderline pretentious.

PosieParker · 16/05/2008 17:30

I love the name Coco and Reuben.

Lizzzombie · 16/05/2008 17:31

I know 2 baby Reubens. I reckon its making a come back - you are "on trend" !!

scanner · 16/05/2008 17:32

Reuben is fab, Nicole is ok, Coco - fine, that's the thing with shortening/nicknames you can be slightly outrageous.

LemonTart · 16/05/2008 17:34

I like both too. Bit different without being too different.
Personally I quite like Coco too. I have this vision of a sweet little toddler with big brown eyes and gorgeous dark brown ringlets tottering around in her mums shoes.. (although saying that... we did live next to a large fat pampered persian pedigree cat that was called Coco! )

cornsilk · 16/05/2008 17:36

'Coco, come in for your tea NOW!'
Could you really imagine yourself shouting that down the street in a few years time?

Rocky12 · 16/05/2008 17:38

Love Nicola, very french and elegant.

Coco is the name of SIL's dog

Reuben is OK but would your son really thank you for a name like that.

gingerwench · 16/05/2008 17:39

I love Reuben but too similar to DH's name to make our shortlist

Nicole is ok, Coco a bit interesting but would be known as coconut

jk1 · 16/05/2008 17:43

I can deal with being pretentious! ASlso so many dogs called Alfie and doesn't seem to bother the 100's calling their kids it!

Page 3 a bit worrying though anyone else think Nicole is Page 3???

I am a bit worried Reuben on the rise but think you need to be careful with boys and can't be too odd!

AbbeyA · 16/05/2008 17:47

Nicole is getting very popular as a name. Coco would get coco the clown or coconut.
Not keen on Reuben (I suppose he could shorten to Ben).
Sorry-you did say to be honest.
