Hello,

I am 29 weeks pregnant, with a baby boy. Looking for opinions on the following baby names, we have a few picked out we really like but struggling to decide between them.

Names on our list:
Edison
Hayes
Silas
Laurie
Benson

Thankyou. X

Congratulations! How exciting!

Laurie - really lovely, my favourite
Edison - really like it
Silas - Quite nice
Hayes - I don't like this one, bit odd.
Benson - & Hedges, really not keen on this one.

I like surnames as first names, one of my children has what is most commonly thought of a surname though there are a couple of rather famous people with it as a first name.

mummysmagicmedicine · 29/03/2025 19:20

Edison- it’s okay but not amazing but that’s just my opinion, how about Harrison or Jenson?
Hayes- i really like
Silas- it’s okay but reminds me of a stylus pen used for an iPad🙈
Laurie- prefer it if short for Lawrence
Benson- my favourite out of them all!

I think they're all pretty awful. Just go for a good solid boy name like James or Edward etc and forget trying to be 'different'.

Mudkipper · 30/03/2025 10:02

I used to know a very nice labrador called Benson.

The only one of your names I would consider would be Laurie and I would use Laurence as his full name.

Kioki · 01/04/2025 20:27

The only one I like is Edison

Elly1995 · 05/04/2025 22:07

I don’t like common names like James or Edward, I want something different without the names sounding strange. I also like the name Elson.

I do not like common names like James or Edward, I would like to be different. I do not want the different names I choose to sound strange, but I would like him to attend school and not have the same name as other boys in his class.

I do like the name Elson as well.

Okay, but you came here looking for opinions.

Do what you like.

How many young boys called James or Edward do you know?

RogueFemale · 11/04/2025 21:15

@Elly1995 P.S. all your shortlist names sound 'strange'.

Edison
Hayes
Silas
Laurie
Benson

user2848502016 · 11/04/2025 21:53

Edison - yeah it’s ok
Hayes - No
Silas - cute
Laurie - I like, best one on your list
Benson - awful , benson & hedges….

Veggielepsy · 11/04/2025 22:06

Silas is great, Laurie is ok, Laurence is great, Edison, don't love it. Hayes, nah, bit lame. Benson, Christ no way please don't. The poor soul will hear nothing but 'and hedges?' elson isn't a particularly nice sounding first name.

All the above fine as surnames.

Reddelilah · 12/04/2025 08:17

Laurence is a girls name, the feminine version of Laurent.

I like Silas best

I’m not the op, but I know at least 3 young Edwards and 4 James. That’s on top of the 10 or so adults we k ow called James or Ed/Edward!

DuchessOfNarcissex · 12/04/2025 18:33

@Reddelilah , yes, as proved by such women as Laurence Olivier, Laurence Fishburne, Laurence Fox, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Laurence Rees, Laurence Harvey ...

17caterpillars1mouse · 12/04/2025 20:25

Silas, handsome and unusual

DuchessOfNarcissex · 13/04/2025 19:09

@Reddelilah
Babies called Laurence in England & Wales since 1996 all boys, no girls.
Babies called Laurent in England & Wales since 1996

Reddelilah · 13/04/2025 20:15

Well, there are other countries outside of the UK. I happen to know several women called Laurence who are French and Belgian.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 13/04/2025 20:33

@Reddelilah , but they are French and Belgian but Mumsnet is based in the UK. Someone, probably you, posts on every thread that mentions the name Laurence that it's a girl's name and it's tedious.

Nicola and Andrea are men's names in Italy but I know loads of female British women called Nicola and Andrea.

In the UK, Laurence is a boy's name.

Reddelilah · 13/04/2025 20:43

In an increasingly global world, it’s helpful for the op to know that in some countries Laurence is a feminine name. It may or may not influence their decision but I feel it’s good to know.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 13/04/2025 20:54

@Reddelilah , OP hasn't asked about Laurence.

PreggersWithBaby2 · 13/04/2025 21:10

Edison - I like it
Hayes - Not a fan, can't put my finger on why
Silas - No, reminds me of the character from The Da Vinci Code
Laurie - I like it, as it is, no need to give a longer name
Benson - liked it until I read some above say Benson & Hedges which is very often shortened to Benson so it's a no.

mathanxiety · 13/04/2025 21:21

DuchessOfNarcissex · 13/04/2025 20:54

@Reddelilah , OP hasn't asked about Laurence.

She asked about Laurie, which is very much a girl's name in many countries.

Whoarethoseguys · 13/04/2025 21:33

I think Laurie is nicest me from that list. Silas is also nice. I'm not keen on the others.

GRCP · 13/04/2025 21:42

I love Edison (Eddie or Teddy nn)

To be yoouneeque I guess.
