Sophie is the classic but I like Jennifer and think it would be more unusual for a baby born now!

DelilahDystopia · 27/03/2025 13:45

Sophie

I love Jenny on its own but not keen on Jennifer

Jennifer is dated.

LlynTegid · 27/03/2025 15:19

Sophie, less dated and no real abbreviation.

ginasevern · 27/03/2025 15:45

Jennifer all the way. There's something rather ethereal about Jennifer. She will have a timeless, pretty and unusual name whereas Sophie is two a penny.

BoleynMemories13 · 27/03/2025 15:50

I prefer Sophie, but do know of a young Jennifer. It is fairly classic, it just was so popular in the 70s/80s that it feels a bit dated now it's much less commonly used. I'd put it in a similar bracket to Catherine, Victoria, Caroline, Sarah, Alexandra, Hannah, Lucy, Bethany etc. Used nowhere near as often as it once was, but I don't think anyone would be shocked or surprised to meet a young one. It's not like Tracy or Karen which are bound more to a certain generation.

Personally, I much prefer the shortening Jenna. I find Jenny a bit dull.

SmurfKingdom · 27/03/2025 15:52

I know way too many Sophie’s and think it’s too ‘cutesy’ for my taste. Jennifer’s lovely though.

Manchesterbythesea · 27/03/2025 15:53

Sophie!

AdaColeman · 27/03/2025 16:04

Jennifer! There are thousands of Sophies already!

Pinepeak2434 · 27/03/2025 16:08

I voted Sophie but I actually quite like Jennifer too. I know this is silly but my son’s form tutor is called Jennifer and she’s such a lovely woman so it reminds me of her, and I know another Jennifer in her 30s who is another lovely person so the name sparks positivity for me. 😄

unlikelywitch · 27/03/2025 16:13

Sorry but I wouldn’t choose either. Jennifer screams 80s/90s to me and I’m not keen on Jenny or Jen. Sophie is timeless and lovely but much too common.

Are these the only names you like?

SallyWD · 27/03/2025 16:23

Sophie's always seemed a bit wet to me. I know so many Sophies of all ages. I'd say I probably know more girls/women called Sophie than any other name.
I really like Jennifer/Jenny. I know a little girl called Jenny and it's so refreshing to hear her name amongst all the Islas, Avas, Ellas and Sophies.

hattie43 · 27/03/2025 16:29

Jennifer / Jenny / Jen for me . Sophie is far too common these days

I don't know any Jennifer's under 60 odd, but I still like it and think it's about time it had a comeback!
You could always go fancy and have Genevieve with NN Jenny?
And she could always be a Jen or Jenna if she liked it better.

Abracadabra12345 · 27/03/2025 16:35

I can imagine a little girl called Jennifer or Jenny, so adorable! And a great adult woman name too

Pemba · 27/03/2025 16:42

I voted Sophie as I love it (more so than the currently ubiquitous Sophia).

But I also really like Jennifer and it would be unusual now. It's heyday as a baby name was probably the 60s and 70s, but so what? People who like to follow the herd will of course trot out 'dated!' but it's actually a refreshingly pretty name.

YourAmberFawn · 27/03/2025 16:59

Jennifer is far too dated. When you hear Jennifer, you can instantly guess the person is - at the very youngest - 30.

Sophie is more of a timeless classic - out of the two I would choose Sophie.

BeaLola · 27/03/2025 17:11

Of the 2 I prefer Jennifer nn Jen or Jenny but similar and my preference Genevieve - lots of nn and a beautiful name

Pemba · 27/03/2025 17:15

And there it is @YourAmberFawn ... My DD is early 30s, she went to school with lots of Sophies, but only one Jennifer, so it was probably already sliding into the 'dated' box by the 90s, for people who are bothered.

I have seen people call Sophie dated on here though, 'boring', etc probably because it was so popular in the 90s. Now Sophia is everywhere because it's more fashionable and an alternative to Sophie. Probably in 25 years they'll put Sophia in the dated box, along with Evie, Isla and Isabella.

But can't people think outside the box, and just pick the name they like?

AliBaliBee1234 · 27/03/2025 17:16

How about Jenna? I love that name. I like Jennifer but can't get the fact it's so dated out if my head.

Sophie is nice but very common

Growsomeballswoman · 27/03/2025 17:21

Unless your last name is Taylor, Jenna is nice.

Moreteaandchocolate · 27/03/2025 17:26

I’m a massive fan of Jennifer! A little Jenny would be gorgeous 💕

Which is why I said, at the youngest 30 - because it was really not used much after the 90s. I was not implying it was at its peak in the 90s!

To me, yes, Sophie is boring, but not dated. If you hear somebody is named Sophie you really can’t guess their age. It is a name that has remained popular for generations, it has not been out of the top 100 in many years - which is why I prefer it to Jennifer.

OP asked if Jennifer is dated or classy, so as one does on a forum, I gave my opinion.

Emanwenym · 27/03/2025 17:54

I prefer Sophie but given that Sophia/Sofia is everywhere I'd pick Jennifer.

I don't like Jenna or Genevieve
