Hi,

I was just thinking, there’s so many posts on here day in and out, but how much do people listen?
Has anybody on here ever posted a name they loved, got negative feedback, and decided to name their child something else?

I know I thought I needed public opinion, but I posted my now newborn daughter’s name (Gia) before she was born for opinions, and a lot of people didn’t like it! But it didn’t change my opinion like I thought.

I love interacting with these threads and giving opinion, I guess I’m just wondering if people take on the advice given!

-typo in the title - been influenced - not being lol

Yes tended to do opposite than views expressed - rebel aren’t I

I think it can be helpful if it opens your eyes to a generally negative view of the name, I wouldn’t want to accidentally put that on my kid. If I were considering a few names and there was one everyone hated, it probably would put me off as I wouldn’t want them to go through life with everyone they meet thinking they have a horrible name.

MN is flaky though. Before my son was born, when we were struggling to decide, I looked for his name on here and comments were generally positive. Now I see it come up in active once in a while and a lot of people hate it! I do hate a lot of the standard MN much-loved names though so I’m not sure I care too much.

Four years ago I loved the name Alma. I didn't use it for my dd mostly because it was destroyed here on mn and I'm not English so I thought she would be bullied in England etc. NOW Alma is well loved here, turns out I was just ahead of the game and now it's considered gorgeous by most people 😡

Have you being inflicted by MN?

inflicted 😂

I remember your post! Congratulations on the birth of little Gia. Did you go for Rosalie or Eliza in the end? Smile

HugoYorway · 25/03/2025 14:07

We had set our hearts on Balonz for LO but apparently it's very popular in Surrey, so we went for Jaythan instead.

Thank you!

We actually decided to go for Gia Liliana, after my grandmother who is named Lilly-Anna!

I didn’t see that thread but I really dislike the name Alma and find it about the polar opposite of gorgeous 😂

HugoYorway · 25/03/2025 15:15

I don't think it's gorgeous either. I think of Alma Sedgwick.

See I’ve always really liked Alma - but my DH was a heard no on it!

I think it’s another one of those marmite names.

Love Lilliana.

How do you pronounce Gia?

like Mia or Mya with a g, or gee- a

Yes, over 20 years ago I asked MN re calling DS2 Joshua. Consensus was there were a lot of Joshuas so we went for something different.
Didn't regret it.

AddictedToDarkChocolate · 27/03/2025 21:06

Someone I know posted about the name Aurora that she was thinking of using for her daughter. Thankfully she listened and called her daughter something else.

TheaBrandt1 · 27/03/2025 21:07

Someone said my dds name sounded like a boat. Fair comment I guess. Didn’t change my mind!

I do warn new mothers certain names are really popular if that bothers them. Mainly because I nearly called dd1 the most popular name that year and swerved at the last minute. So glad I did she would have been saddled with a dull ubiquitous name and been one of 3 in a class. First baby group I went to there were 3.

bettydavieseyes · 27/03/2025 21:10

I posted over 8 years ago about a sister name for Eve. Someone said Olive which I thought was a gorgeous combo but went for something more frilly/pretty. I love my daughters names but even now I sometimes wish I'd gone for Olive!
