Hi everyone!

I've been struggling to come up with a name for my baby boy, i have been set on Oliver for a while but it didn’t feel right. Last night me and my partner thought of the name Dexter, (Dex for a nickname)

Do you like the name Dexter?

I've always liked it - maybe due to a teenage crush on Dexter Fletcher.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 12/03/2025 21:01

Love Oliver
Dexter sounds a bit rough

There was a queue which my teenage self really hoped I was at the front of! Grin

I think if you're going for Dexter it's a name that you'd really have to love. It makes me think of the serial killer too.

Oliver is a pleasant enough make but the popularity of it woukd put me off. DD had so many in her class that they were all know by both their first and last name in full as even using their first name and initial of their last name wasn't enough to distinguish them.

I did think for a while that naming your DS Oliver had been made compulsory here.

Dog

DramaAlpaca · 12/03/2025 21:44

I quite like Dex, but not Dexter so much.

I love Oliver, though.

mummysmagicmedicine · 12/03/2025 21:53

I love it, I know one who’s about 10 and goes by Dex and it’s so cool

Scrabbelator · 12/03/2025 22:09

My first thought was Dexter cattle.

MedusaAndHerFavourites · 12/03/2025 22:12

I know a ten year old Dexter and he is wonderful!

ZiggyZowie · 12/03/2025 22:13

Yes

Garlicgarlicgarlic · 12/03/2025 22:13

It's ok, but I wouldn't like it if pronounced without the 'r', like Dextah

Ozmumofboys3 · 12/03/2025 22:28

Dexter is ok but far prefer Oliver but may be biased as I have one!

It's weird, Oliver is meant to be such a popular name but mine is the only in his year at school, in fact not sure I know of any others at his school 🤔. He's certainly not Oliver 'surname'.

Balloonhearts · 12/03/2025 22:31

I think of the really naughty donkey on YouTube, ngl.

Danielle9891 · 12/03/2025 22:31

I like Oliver but it's really common. I'm currently watching the new Dexter prequel about the serial killer so that's a no for me.

Pumpkincozynights · 12/03/2025 22:33

No I don’t like it. I think it’s a dog’s name.

Zeldasie · 12/03/2025 22:37

No i don't like it. Serial killer and Dexamethozone/Dex

Zeldasie · 12/03/2025 22:38

But I also find Oliver overused and unmemorable.

RobertJohnsonsShoes · 12/03/2025 22:39

No, sorry

Sunnydays25 · 12/03/2025 22:56

A no from me, serial killer and dogs name.

If you want a D name, how about Daniel - it's classic, works in different languages in case of future travels, can use Danny as a nickname. I can't think of any awful Daniels.

Endofyear · 12/03/2025 23:04

Not really, but only because it reminds me of that serial killer show!

SpringIsSpringing25 · 12/03/2025 23:05

Yes, I like it, but only if you're planning on giving birth to a labrador.

Oliver is way way way too overused.

SabbatWheel · 12/03/2025 23:11

I teach a Dexter and it really suits him. He's Dex for short.

YourBestFriend · 12/03/2025 23:20

No.

twitchwitch · 12/03/2025 23:30

@TinyMouseTheatre
I was in that queue too!
Loved the name when I was pregnant with my DS (now 19) but DH hated it sadly. Still think it's great - though have never watched the serial killer programme!

HeathenPlayingHouse · 12/03/2025 23:32

Love it, but I'm biased 😊

As many PP have mentioned, there is the association with the TV show about a serial killer of the same name.

What sold it for me however, was remembering how much I loved Bing Crosby as the character C. K. Dexter Haven in the film High Society 😍
And Dexter Fletcher, of course- I loved him in Hotel Babylon.

PuddledPeople · 12/03/2025 23:37

It’s fine. I was also in the queue for Dexter Fletcher.
