I’m currently 7 months pregnant with my first, a girl, and feel no closer to picking a name so starting to panic a little!

I love more traditional and old fashioned names that can then be shortened or with smaller nicknames for when they’re little but also love some more ‘hippie’/nature based names. I’ve got a fairly standard nickname ending with ‘son’ (think Johnson etc) and would love a middle name too. Current short list is:
Florence (Flo, Flossie, Florrie)
Jemima (Jem, Mim)
Elodie (Ellie, Didi)
Violet (V, Lettie)
Georgina (Gigi)
Emmeline (Emmie)
Amelia (Lia, Milly)
Alma
Olive
Hallie
Tessa

Any suggestions or help narrowing it down would be amazing!!

Love Constance too!

I adore the name Jemima from that list
But don't like Hallie.

I’ve always loved Henrietta/Hetty but worry it could be too ‘posh’? I think it’s so pretty.

I also love Matilda but the nn would need to be Tilda as I had a pet called Tilly 😂

Some amazing names on here! Sadly a few are out with family/friends names but I love Eleanor and a few of the others are on my longer ‘short’ list!

Ophelia (LOVE)
Elysia
Leila
Aria

Gorgeous list! So hard to pick from such lovely names!

I think my favourite is the beautiful, simple and underused Tessa - it hits the sweet spot of familiar but not too popular, classic but not dated or trendy and suits all ages equally.
Florence and Violet are close runners up!

These are lovely too but have some drawbacks

Georgina (not too keen on the nn’s)
Olive (might become another Liv like the millions of Olivia’s!)
Hallie (a bit trendy).
Alma - (might be misheard as one of the many more popular names starting and ending in vowels - but that’s probably a me thing - I’m all for an easy life with names 😅)
Emmeline (might be misheard as Emily)
Amelia (too popular)
Jemima (I love for a child but wouldn’t like to be called it myself)
Elodie (so many Ellie’s!)

Ideas

Alice
Harriet / Hattie
Hazel
Iris
Heidi
Clara
Georgia
Margot
Eliza
Imogen
Rosalie
Mabel
Dorothy / Dory

fo2fo · 10/03/2025 21:59

Lovely names OP, I especially like Florence from your list, and possibly Georgia instead of Georgina

Penelope (Nell) is my current favourite girls name, also
Katherine/Kathryn
Abigail
Vivienne
Genevieve
Marianne
Celeste
Juliette
Julieanne
Celeste
Eloise

I have a Hetty and I wouldn’t say it’s posh at all. Hetty is her full name rather than Henrietta. I’m obviously biased, but it’s a great name 😊

BootballJoy · 10/03/2025 22:36

I like Tessa - I think it was traditionally short for Theresa but it's nicer on its own.

Other ideas:

Elizabeth nn Bessie (or Libby, or Betty)
Matilda nn Mattie
Philippa nn Pip
Harriet nn Hattie
Henrietta nn Hettie/Henri
Veronica nn Ronnie
Peggy
Persephone nn Sephy
Seraphina nn Sephy/Fi
Antonia nn Toni
Miriam nn Mim/Miri
Francesca nn Frankie
Katherine nn Kitty
Dorothea nn Dotty

LoudPlumDog · 10/03/2025 23:38

I’m not into nicknames at all.

I love Olive, Amelia and Tessa from your list.

Some others I love are …

Ella
Layla
Leah
Frances
Laura
Zara
Charlotte
Alice
Nina
Beatrice
Isobel
Lillian

sel2223 · 11/03/2025 04:44

Lovely list of names. I think my favourites are Emmeline and Georgina for both long name and nn options.

Least faves probably Olive (prefer as a middle name) and Hallie

love Hetty though

Emanwenym · 11/03/2025 07:54

Florence (Flo, Flossie, Florrie)
Jemima (Jem, Mim) - Mim isn't great
Elodie (Ellie, Didi) - Ellie has been done to death and Didi is a French slang word
Violet (V, Lettie) - she'll be Vi (rhymes with high)
Georgina (Gigi) -George or Gina. Gigi is awful
Emmeline (Emmie)
Amelia (Lia, Milly) - Lia is contrived
Alma
Olive - dreary
Hallie - too modern
Tessa - prefer just Tess

Suggestions - Flora. Vanessa. Christina, Cassandra

Toptotoe · 11/03/2025 08:04

I love most of your ideas. I think Tessa is my favourite.

Other ideas:

Constance - Connie
Helen(a) - Nell/ Nelly
Stephanie - Stevie
Mitsy
Hebe
maggie
Peggy
Simone - Simmy
Dorothy - Dot, Dotty
Katharine - Kate/ Kitty

I think you might love Rosalie and Juliet

I love Emmeline, Florence and Violet from your list. Georgina and Elodie are nice, so is Amelia. I would say Georgina is somehow dated, while Elodie might be slightly trendy. Jemima might sound racist in USA.

I do like Alma, but wouldn't choose it for my kid. Don't like Hallie, Olive and Tessa.

ideas

Emmeline Alma
Emmeline Grace
Emmeline Juliet
Emmeline Heidi
Florence Giselle
Florence Evelyn
Florence Paola
Florence Tabitha
Violet Rosalie
Violet Emmeline
Violet Georgina
Violet Madeleine

Lucyaugust2007 · 11/03/2025 10:10

I really like Emmeline from your list.

Also love Theodora, Genevieve and Rosanna.

Ashley12345 · 11/03/2025 15:59

I love your list! All so beautiful, I specially love Florence and Violet. Other old fashioned names:

Rosemary
Eleanor
Claudia
Victoria

theamooberry · 12/03/2025 17:30

I absolutely adore Emmeline. Much prettier and more flowery than the other Em- names in my opinion and it's not incredibly common but not so unique it'd be misspelt.. and easy to pronounce etc.

mathanxiety · 12/03/2025 17:33

I like Alma, Hallie, and Tessa from your list.

The rest are pretty pedestrian MC names.

QuestPip · 12/03/2025 22:57

Hi
I have an 18yr old Georgina that has only had a NN of Genie from a toddler and Geo with her older friends.

I have a 10 yr old called Delilah and dont shorten it but she was going to be Jemima , Tallulah or Dorothy, I absolutely love this name!
