Lana or Arna

This naming business is difficult work! Still haven't found the 'one' but We like the names Lana and Arna. We already have DD - Isla.
I'm not sure if Arna is actually a real name spelling but that's how we'd pronounce it, like in Frozen 😅
What are your thoughts in these 2 names and which do you prefer? I don't care for any backwards spelling comments as we are aware and I don't think it will be too much of an issue.
Thank you MN xx

Arna was the name of one of the Beaumont children. That's a sad association for me, so I would avoid it.

modgepodge · 26/02/2025 16:28

As above Anna is the spelling in frozen. If you call her that everyone will call her Anna pronounced the English way to rhyme with Hannah. Ana (maybe short for Anastasia?) I would assume was pronounced arna. I really don’t like the way arna looks written down.

Iwishiwasapolarbear · 26/02/2025 16:32

I wouldn’t choose Arna it looks weird.

I like Lana but understand the issue with the name being spelled backwards- not sure how likely it would be that kids would tease about that.

there’s also Lara, Alana, Ariana, Eliana, Sara, Cara, Elara, Liliana, Alara which are similar. The ones ending in Ana are pronounced like Arna so that could be a nick name

BootballJoy · 26/02/2025 16:42

I would vote PP's suggestion of Alana, if you like it.

TheFlyingHorse · 26/02/2025 16:47

I like Anna but prefer Lara to Lana. Definitely don't go for Arna.

ginasevern · 26/02/2025 17:10

I don't like Lana very much but Arna either sounds like a dairy product or calls you out as a Disney parent. How about Lorna and split the difference.

SemperIdem · 26/02/2025 17:45

I would go for Lara or Lena over Lana. People very much do pick up on what it is spelled backwards, unfortunately.

Arna is a spelling I’ve seen pick up some traction on social media over the last few years. An Australian fitness influencer named her daughter this, I’ve seen a few Americans too. I think the spelling is tremendously ugly.

Snorlaxo · 26/02/2025 17:52

Arna makes me think Arla and cow farts. I would consider Ana in the hope that people don’t assume Anna rhyming with Hanna.

Zuve · 26/02/2025 18:02

I knew someone called Arny and people at school called her barmy Arny. So be careful, I would call her a happy name. For example Amanda or Jill

holyshitballs · 26/02/2025 18:12

Ana is nice.
Presume (but could be completely wrong) Lana comes from the Irish name Alana/Alanna/Alannah.
I have an Alanna nn Lana... it is pronounced with all short 'a's

mommyandmore · 26/02/2025 19:38

Thanks everyone- the consensus seems that Arna is a no go and I don't want to make a name up for her so I'll cross that one off. Lana is still up there for me but I will keep the spelling situation in mind!

Arna ia a made up spelling, it can be spelt as Ana, Anna or Anya.

RuthW · 27/02/2025 15:33

Ana - said Arna.

Not Lana.

MiddleAgedDread · 27/02/2025 16:36

Isla and Lana is a bit of a mouthful together! too many l's and a's for me.

Sixthform25 · 27/02/2025 16:52

Other options could be;
Isla & Elise
Isla & Anna (depends on accent but the classic name is nice!)
Isla & Anya
Isla & Abigail (Abby)
Isla & Laura
Isla & Elspeth
Isla & Lottie
Isla & Lena (lovely name but not sure they go as well together)

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 27/02/2025 16:54

Arna sounds like Arnie.

Anastasia/ Ana is a good sub

Or Alana

🥰 May I ask if you have had any problems with backward spelling comments? I don't see it as an issue and even though I said it in my original post a few have already commented...

Nope, no one has ever made comments about the backward spelling. However, when she was 6 I walked into her room and she'd spelt out ANAL in magnetic letters on her chalkboard, she was most pleased with herself for learning to spell her name backwards, she asked me if it was also a name pronounced ’Ann arl'.
Don't think she's realised it yet,

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 02/03/2025 20:36

Neither.

Lana is anal spelled backwards and Arna is a misspelling.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 02/03/2025 20:38

How about Anya, Alana, Lara or Lorna?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/03/2025 01:05

Lana is lovely - makes me think of Lana Turner. I’ve always wondered why it’s not more popular, I suspect it could rapidly rise in future as it fits all the current trends. Personally I doubt anyone would mention the spelt backwards thing except the odd teenager and it would be a pretty juvenile thing to consistently tease about.

Agree that if you want Arna, you should spell it Ana but personally I’d split the difference with beautiful Alana as suggested- I think I lot of people say it as “Ah-lah-nah” with that long middle A sound.
