Nico or Hugo?

I don't much like Hugo, the classic but boring Hugh is nicer.

Nah. It's popular now, which means that if you are having children now they will probably know Hugos in their generation, whereas it might be out of fashion in 30 years time.

I always find these threads baffling. The number of people who say Hugo is the name of a posh older man and then suggest Hugh as an alternative is deeply weird IMO.

Agree, who are these people 😆 I'm in my late thirties, live in London and have a relatively international friendship group and Hugo is a totally normal and cool name that I hear a lot, especially used by French/Scandi/Aussie parents. Similar to Max, Sebastian, Alexander, Noah, Theo.

The posh private school tory stereotype is definitely not a thing for this generation. Mn is a strange universe.

@MissScarletInTheBallroom I'm not "having children now", mine are secondary and late primary so have conceded things change as Henry did, but I don't know a single one, not even amongst my London colleagues, I'm not lying, I'm just giving my opinion. Hugo to me is a toff name, we all have certain thoughts when we hear a name, sometimes it'll be contradictory to others based on our own circumstances, sometimes it changes over time, half of the old lady names girls have now would have picked on horrendously in my school days, but they sound beautiful now.

Nothing to be "baffled" about. Just different experiences and opinions. And if a few people are saying the same thing, shock horror, they're probably not lying or trying to annoy you, but just giving what is a commonly shared feeling.

The thing is, people who aren't having children now commenting on baby name threads is a bit like 50 somethings in the 1990s saying, "Chloe? What kind of name is that? You should call your baby something more normal, like Tracey."

So true! Also the same people who think the only appropriate names are Elizabeth and James, the rest are wet or twee.

I’m still in the middle of IVF and have a toddler (hence why I said I’d met several young Hugo’s at baby/toddler groups). But I’m also nearly mid 40’s and can still remember when Hugo was seen as a UC/public school name, so I’m guessing some other parents and teachers will remember too.

Yes, times are thankfully changing but I do think it’s a fair enough thing to point out to the OP, especially if she’s not from the UK? so isn’t aware of the class connotations some names have or used to have. Absolutely doesn’t mean she shouldn’t use it, but if she’s torn between it and Nico then it might be something else to consider.

(Btw I have nothing against “posh” names as such- one of my faves for girls is Octavia 🤣 but whether I’d actually use it I don’t know).

My Hugo is 16 and the only one in his school. Unfortunately we live somewhere with a strong local accent and he mostly gets called Yoooooogo 😀

We've always called him Hugs. Baby Hugs for about the first 5 years.

Thanks @MissScarletInTheBallroom Its a frozen transfer and my last chance - too old to go through the full thing again now🤣 But it does tend to make me note more the names of the babies and toddler’s I meet at DS’s groups - for inspiration if nothing else! Btw I have never met a Nico OP - but I can think of a few younger celeb ones, hence the cool.

(But it’s so interesting how people view names differently- to me Hugh was a reasonable suggestion as I see it as an underused classic like Peter or Patrick but I can see how others would think 50 plus man!)
