Love the name Amelie, but keen to understand if there would be any different pronunciations to how I would say it?

Would you say it;

Amma-Lee

Or

A-meee-leee

I really want OP to come back now and see if the second one was her trying to pronounce it in french!

The second one bears no resemblance to the French pronunciation

I would have pronounced it more ammeh-lee, with a short e for the first e. Very pretty.

This.

It’s a really lovely name OP.

The German spelling is Amalie, and it seems that spelling would correspond more closely to the popular Amma-lee?!

It's like Emily, but with an A.

A few things to bear in mind about my experience with Amélie (with or without the accent):

  • She was known as Amelie (Surname initial) as she's one of at least two at nursery or school.
  • Everyone over 40 repeats her name back as "Emily" and she becomes adept at shouting back "AMELIE! NOT EMILY!"
  • Anyone reading her name off a form calls her Amelia.
  • Everyone forgets the accent, including herself.
  • She experiments with renaming herself Millie.
