Greek boys name (we're not Greek)

Would love suggestions of Greek boys names that don't sound too out there if we're not Greek - we love many Greek names but feel they all sound a bit odd with the cultural connection...

Maximus
Julius
Cassius

None of these are Greek!

A lot of the names being suggested are ridiculous - Pyrros, Vasilis, Dimos??? Poor kid!

I think people are just listing Greek names not necessarily nice ones. It’s all a matter of opinion isn’t it? The ‘o s’ ending names sounds strange to a non Greek person but it’s very common there. My dad is ‘Vassilios’. The English equivalent is William which would probably sound just as weird to a Greek person.

Nicholas, Christos, Raphael, Markos,Marios,constantinos
Oor many English names have Greek origins... George, Paul, Anthony, Mark.

So, when someone realises it's a Greek name and you're not Greek.....

Why a Greek name if you have no cultural connection?

Because it's a name they like. Who cares about cultural connections?

UpMyself · 11/02/2025 08:24

@RadStag , lots of people.

Costas.
Demetri ( Demeetree)

Demetrios is one of my favourite Greek names. Mainly because I have a Greek friend who has a beautiful gentle kind 15 year old called Demetrios. They call him Dima for short.

Calling a kid Adonis seems almost setting him up for failure.....how could anyone live up to a name like that?

Delphigirl · 12/02/2025 09:59

It’s just Anthony, @Twixtmasjigsaw , a perfectly normal name. One of the most common names in Greece.

Maddy70 · 12/02/2025 10:03

DS1 was at school with Adonis. DS2 was at nursery with Demetrios. Adonis wasn’t Greek, family is European Jewish but not Greek.

I was always in love with the name Ptolemy but my DH was having none of it!

How about Pyrros
Dimos
Konstantinos?

Neither was mine. He’s dyslexic and refuses to give his child a name he couldn’t spell… fair, but I love it!

Upyerbum111 · 14/02/2025 21:20

Lefteris, which is liberty in English. Has to be the best Greek name
