I prefer Esther to Grace.

Martha is my current favourite girl's name

If I'd had a daughter, it was going to be Cyd, after Cyd Charise or Winter, after a character in an M M Kaye book, Shadow of the Moon, just because they were names that stuck with me. I like Esther and have a friend with the name and we were never able to successfully shorten her name, so Esther always gets her full name in a conversation (I know many hate that names are shortened, so could be a consideration).

Another name I like is Ellen and this is often shortened to Nell.

I think the question is, what do you like about Grace, and why do you think your partner's suggestion is so far off the mark that it's laughable? I could imagine sisters called Grace and Esther, so I'm curious.

Goandygo · 30/01/2025 11:49

Esther is lovely, Grace a bit overused. Both are nice.

miniaturepixieonacid · 30/01/2025 16:10

Grace and Esther are both really lovely. I might be tempted to go for Esther because it's less common (and I have a stupid, overthinking worry about calling a child Grace who then turns out to be really ungraceful!)

Obvious alternatives would be:
Faith, Hope, Felicity, Patience
Naomi, Miriam, Abigail, Rebecca, Lydia, Elizabeth, Deborah, Ruth, Rachel, Leah, Hannah, Martha, Mary, Sarah, Joanna, Zipporah

Maxorias · 30/01/2025 16:26

For girls I like names in -ine like Séraphine, Joséphine, Celestine, Charline...

If my DD had been born a year before or a year later she'd have been either Séraphine or Celestine. As it is I gave her another -ine name.

Goandygo · 30/01/2025 17:55

@Maxorias I love Delphine.

Sounds like you both like biblically inspired names! Esther is Old Testament and Grace a concept in Pauline theology the New Testament. Have a Google!

Esther is one of the prophetesses. Also: Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Miriam, Deborah... And Huldah, which never caught on.

Later significant women are: Anna (mother of Mary), Mary, Elizabeth, Salome, Lydia and Joanna, I think.
